Pat and I met in a summer English lit class at OSU in the 1960s. Became roommates. Stayed in touch even after our lives diverged after graduation. I had privilege of staying with Pat in her Evanston condo for a week some time after her stem cell procedure. We had a great time. I realized afterward that I lived in the moment every moment we were together that week. I think I knew she was still sick even though she was happy and feeling well. Her loss has been very hard. Maybe she's gotten to meet all he favorite writers and scientists in Heaven, and I know she wanted to be reunited with her maternal grandparents.

Pat and I were inseparable friends during graduate school at the University of Chicago, while she was working on her Ph.D. in English and I in Germanic Linguistics. We worked out together (racket ball, running, tennis), organized dinners and outings with friends, and worked together on the Linguistic Atlas of the US. I remember her vivaciousness, curiosity, charm and infectious laughter. Having lost touch for a time we rekindled our friendship during the last few years of her life. It was a privilege to call her a friend.

Dear Hefner Family,
I had the distinct privilege of meeting Patricia as an appraiser. She was so energetic and vibrant – you could not avoid being caught up in her enthusiasm. She worked very hard to make the appraisal profession and the Chicago Chapter (ASA) better. As she rose through the ranks of leadership I worked with her as publisher for the Chapter newsletter. Her attention to detail was a constant inspiration that I carry with me today… I was deeply saddened by her passing and I pray that the family understands how special she was to every life she touched…

I met Patricia through the Chicago Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers. She was in line to be the Chapter President at the time. She encouraged me to become more involved and to run for the board. The things that I remember most about the time I had the privilege of working with her were; the amount of effort she put into getting things right, how inclusive she was, and how supportive she was. We are all better for the time we were able to spend with her. I will miss her but will allways try to remember what I learned from her.

It was a privilege to work with Patricia for many years in the pursuit to advance the appraisal profession. She inspired all of us with her drive, enthusiasm, and attention to detail. Patricia’s thoughtful and creative approach to issues transformed the Chicago Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers into the organization that it is today.
Not only will we miss her as a friend and a professional colleague, but also as a dedicated leader.

Patricia was the inspiration for me to teach a class at Northwestern University's school of Continuing Studies. Her commitment to the ASA and enthusiasm helped me through that first semester, from bringing pizza for everyone the first day of class to making sure there was publicity in the ASA newsletter. We will all miss her.

Pat and I met in an undergrad English class at Ohio State the summer of 1967. We became roommates for the next 3 or 4 years. I met my husband through Pat. Though not sent for that occasion, we had our twin boys christened in outfits that Pat sent us. Our lives went separate directions but we stayed in touch and stayed close for the 40+ years we knew one another. I will always treasure the week I spent with her in her Evanston home in Sept. 2010, after her stem cell transplant. I loved her very much. She will be missed. Vicki Stoddard

Obituary published jointly by the Chicago Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers and by the International Society of Appraisers:
Patricia Lynn Hefner of Evanston, Illinois passed away on February 21, 2011. A personal property appraiser, who specialized in Antiques and Decorative Arts, she was Past President of the Chicago Chapter of the ASA and then went on to serve as a national Board member of the International Society of Appraisers. Outgoing and generous, Patricia offered a cheerful welcome to new members in both the ASA and ISA. We remember her sparkling smile and contagious enthusiasm. Her contributions to both organizations were extraordinary.
Under her leadership, the Chicago Chapter of the ASA won awards for “Best Chapter” of the American Society of Appraisers as well as “Best Public Relations” and “Best Newsletter.” In addition to many articles in the ASA Chicago newsletter, Patricia wrote an annotated bibliography of works about glass. Prior to becoming an appraiser, she received a MBA from the University of Chicago and worked for many years in the banking industry.
After a lengthy illness, Patricia donated her entire reference library of about 2,000 titles to the Kohler Art Library at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. According to the Director, Dr. Lyn Korenic, the wonderful generosity of Patricia Hefner has “helped the Kohler Art Library become a major resource for the decorative arts in this country.” One of the important factors for Patricia in choosing the Kohler Art Library is that it is open to the public so her fellow appraisers will be able to come use the books.

Dear Hefner Family: Permit me one more comment. Having met you last night in Westerville, and having seen the many photographs you posted of Patricia,I thought of the many friendly debates she and I had in the late 1960s and 1970s about counter-culture and protest. Beyond those years she always maintained a mischievous yet moving youthful elan, even through early 2011. She reminds me of the insightful wisdom of Wordsworth:
"Bliss it was of the dawn to be alive,
But to be young was very heaven."
You know my thoughts and prayers are with her and all of you.

Patricia was a most giving, funny and spirited person. She had the ability to take her world, make it work and share with others despite often daunting health issues. Patricia was a teriffic hostess and Chicago "tour guide" for those fortunate enough to visit with her in The Windy City. I hope her spirit is as happy as she made others while she was here.

When I think of Patricia, I remember vivacious enthusiasm and helpfulness. A brilliant writer, she was extraordinarily generous in sharing her time and talent with colleagues. And this support continues even now.
She rejoiced at the opportunity to donate her significant collection of decorative arts books to the Kohler Art Library at UW Madison, which is open to everyone. With the help of Matt, Brandi and Kirk as well as the remarkable Kohler staff and volunteers, the task was accomplished last summer; and Patricia expressed her gratitude for this often as well as her pride in UW alumna Claire-Marie.
Looking ahead to future scholarship despite her illness, she was an inspiration as well as a colleague and friend.

Dear Mrs. Hefner,
Our fourth grade teacher at St. John's, Sr. Mary Ignatious, gave each of us a name from her former class ... so that we could be pen pals. Your Patricia was the name I received and we exchanged letters (across town) for several years. Lo' and behold, I met THE Patty Hefner at Bishop Hartley High School. She was not only stunningly beautiful, she was kind, personable and highly intelligent. The first time we met, I was shy to let her know who I was. I not only remember her fondly from high school, I had the collection of her earlier letters for years and years. I am sad that you, all of us, have to miss her so soon. Sincerely, Marilyn Candice Parsons Wiltshire

Dear Hefner Family,
I had to great previlage of getting to know Patricia through the Chicago Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers. When Patrica became ill we talked a lot and did what we could to be of help and support when she asked. I mentioned to several of our ASA members today that I believe the appraisal industry has lost a valued colleague. The Chicago Chapter has lost charismatic lady who inspired us all with her drive for excellence, professionalism, sense of humor and strive to work harder as a chapter to accomplish goals. Her friends have lost a courageous lady who was a dear friend, a fighter, achiever and one who reminds us all to do it better. Patricia will be sadly missed, fondly remembered and will never be forgotten.

Dear Hefners,
I had the privilege of working with Patricia at First Chicago where she and I worked to build the dealer commercial paper business. I was new to the bank and she made me feel right at home. She was extremely intelligent, but more importantly had a great sense of humor and made working with her a delight. May she rest in peace.

Dear Mrs. Hefner, Patty's death came as a complete shock,I'm so sorry, but how fondly I have always remembered her, you and all the countless hours I spent at your house growing up. Dear Mrs. Hefner and family,
Patricia and I joined the local chapter of ISA at about the same time. I got to know her better when she asked me to assist her in a large appraisal assignment and then again when she was a student in the Fine Art class that I taught. I will always remember her keen mind and her willingness to contribute to the leadership of ISA on a local and national level. She put up a valiant fight against this insidious disease. I will remember her with fondness.

Patricia: I taught her in a history course 43 years ago; we remained in contact since then. She was a dear friend who in the last three and one half years wrote me numerous old-fashioned, ink--written letters which I cherish. Pat always stood out with her striking, alert mind; aesthetic imagination; swift wit; warm heart; a special bond with her cats; and concern and compassion for others to whom she gave time, interest, energy: all the hallmarks of an amazing person who loved life. How her eyes sparkled, smiled. I shall never forget her. 'May her soul be bound with all eternity.'
