Frank Truitt Obituary

Truitt Frank Truitt, age 89, crossed to glory December 21, 2014. Earlier he had said, "When I die, don't be sad for me, because every single day I've had since the war has been a bonus." A man of great faith in Christ, Frank read his Bible cover to cover, spending time every morning reading a little. Frank has great integrity and character, and is full of enthusiasm, fun, love, and joy. His first priority was his family, whom he loved. If students in his classes wanted to avoid the subject matter of the day, they'd just ask him a question about his beloved wife Kay, or their three girls Jean, Nancy, and Susan. Frank Truitt was for 8 years the only full-time assistant coach for The Ohio State University Men's Basketball team, including when they won the NCAA Championship in 1960 - the only time the OSU team has won the NCAA Championship. Frank Truitt's contributions were critically essential to that team's achievements. Other career highlights include coaching his 1958 North High Polar Bears in the Ohio high school State Semi-Finals to a victory over Middletown, who had amassed the longest unbeaten streak (76 games) in Ohio high school basketball history. That win is still viewed as the single biggest upset across all sports in Ohio high school athletic history. Frank also brought the Kent State men's basketball program its first winning seasons in 20 years. He coached the Kent State men's golf team to an MAC Championship and to one of their highest finishes in the NCAA in 1976-77, and was named MAC Coach of the Year. He is an inducted member of at least three Halls of Fame - Ohio Veterans, Ohio High School Basketball, and Otterbein University Athletics. Frank loved his players and students - remembering them always by name. He coached and taught at The Ohio State University, Louisiana State University, Kent State University, and coached at Ohio Wesleyan. He coached basketball and taught subjects including French, Government, and History at Watterson High School, Columbus North High School, Columbus West High School, Mount Gilead, and Bloomingburg. He graduated from Otterbein University with BS and BA degrees in History and Government in 1950. At Otterbein he played basketball and helped found and played on the golf team. He earned an MA in Physical Education from Ohio State in 1962. Frank held a Broker's Real Estate license, and Kay and Frank worked together as a team in real estate. A competitive golfer, Frank held club championships at most of the courses he played as a member. Drafted into World War II before graduating from Worthington High School in 1943, Frank was in three major battles - The Battle of the Bulge, The Battle of the Rhine, and The Battle of the Ardennes Forest. "It's easy to figure out how to pray," Frank said, "when you're in a foxhole praying to live to see your 20th birthday. You don't worry about style." He served in the 282nd Combat Engineers Battalion of Patton's Army. Frank is adored and loved by his family, and he will be missed beyond measure. We miss his quips, his humor, his zest, his love and hugs, his charismatic warmth. Frank was a source of inspiration, fun, and love for everyone whose path crossed his. He knew every person was worthy of the full measure of dignity and respect, for each was of equal worth. He knew by name everyone who worked in the produce section at the grocery store, and treated them with the same interest and respect he'd treat a president. Frank is survived by his beloved wife Kay. They were married for 66 years. He is also survived by two of their four daughters, Nancy (Larry) Truitt Blosser and Jean (John) Ervasti; grandchildren, Jean, Grant (Samantha) Caroline and Scott Truitt Blosser, Jack and Lark Ervasti, Tory Loux, Austen and Ian Smith. Frank is survived by his loyal brother and sister-in-law, Jay and Phyllis Truitt; and by his loyal sister, Fran Truitt. Frank is also survived by nieces and nephews whom he loves. Frank rejoins his and Kay's daughters, Susan Truitt and Baby Girl Truitt; his sister, Mary Evelyn; and his parents, Frank and Charlotte Truitt. Frank's life will be celebrated in a private family service. Messages of remembrance or condolence may be entered at www.schoedinger.com or may be sent to 2357 Southway Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43221. Frank Truitt's remains will be buried in a private ceremony at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Arrangements entrusted to SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL.

I feel so blessed to have worked with Frank and Kay for so many years. You both were truely "two peas in a pod". I love the twinkle in Franks had in his eye everytime he mentioned Kay, the love of his life. He was so excited to come In the office and tell us how well his grandchildren were doing in sports. Another wonderful Angel is in Heaven. Hopefully golfing with Jeff.

Dear Kay, I am so sorry about Frank's passing...I did not know till now..seeing this on our website for first time as I have been out of the loop for awhile. Frank was a really special person and friend to everyone...you were both such a very special and precious couple..always so loving and kind to one another..and so loyal and thoughtful of everyone else always...and, my fond rememberance of how the two of you were the only ones who came the distance to New Albany to attend the open house and brunch at one of my listings...the sense of security I always felt when the two of you, like myself, would often be in the KT ofc working at night. May God Bless you and your family always. Sincerely, Barbara Schmalenberger

My dear Kay,
You have my sincere sympathy on the passing of your sweet dear Frank. When we met Frank at an open house my son Jamison and Frank started talking basketball and from that point on I knew you and Frank would be representing our family in buying a home in Worthington area. I remember as busy as Frank was in real estate he took time out of his busy schedule to watch my son Jamison play high school basketball game at Worthington Kilbourne. That meant so much to Jamison and our family.
May God comfort you and your family during this
sad time.

Mrs. Truitt and Family - Wonderful people leave us but great memories never fade. Coach Truitt, along with Coach Taylor, recruited me to attend OSU in 1965. He moved on to coach at another school before my freshman year but over the years when we ran into one another, he always remembered my name, said hello and took the time to talk. That always made me feel very good and special. I know he will be missed by many but he is in a place now that really counts and is at peace. All of God's love and peace be with you, Mrs. Truitt, and with all of your family. - God Bless, Steve Howell

So sorry for your loss! Frank's quote about learning to pray in a foxhole in WWII reminds me of "The Band of Brothers" series I just watched which helps to understand what courage it took to face that mission!

Truly another one lost from "Our Greatest Generation'.

Franks life path was very similar to my Dad's with Patton's Army in WWII, teaching & coaching BB.

Be comforted by Our Lord!

Frank was one of the nicest people you will ever meet. I was fortunate enough to know Frank when he was the head basketball coach at Kent State. He recruited me and a couple of my teammates from our state championship team in 1971. Our friendship continued through out my adult life; played many a round of golf with Frank when he could still shoot his age! My heartfelt sympathies to Kay and his family.

Dear Truitt family...there are so many words I want to say. Mitch and I moved from YTown to Cbus in 1994. Mitch was going to coach UA basketball. Frank and Kay was the realtor team assigned to help our housing choice. The sole reason I am now a realtor. The integrity and warmth and genuine love they shared let me know it was the career for me. Mitch fell in love with Frank. Imaging those basketball conversations for hours in the Volvo!!!! Not a lot of house discussion:) We love Frank and wish you smiles once the pain subsides. Frank Truitt, one of a kind. I owe him my career. God bless your family.

When Fred Taylor was asked about his long time assistant, he said, "Frank gave the kids the most precious gift one person can give another. He gave them his time. He really cared about the players, and they knew that."

At Larry Siegfried's funeral, every single former player passed Frank's wheel chair in order to say "Hello" to him. They not only knew, they remembered.
