Gerald Cohn Obituary

COHN Gerald "Jerry" Cohn, of Columbus, passed away June 29, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Susan Blough; daughters, Nancy (David) Brody and Janie (John) Burse; brother, Michael (Wendy Miller) Cohn; grandchildren, Noah, Benjy, and Jenna; step-daughters, Betsy (Matt) Campbell and Kate (Clenn Reed) Blough; step-granddaughters, Caroline and Anabel. Jerry was the Executive Director of the Wexner Heritage House for 25 years. Since retiring from that position, he had been involved in many volunteer activities including Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), reading books to the blind on the radio, Columbus Metropolitan Library, the Democratic Party and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He taught his children and grandchildren the importance of having a strong work ethic, caring about others and that anyone's struggle for human rights is all of our struggle. He was a strong advocate of the belief that every vote counts and that one voice can make a difference. He will be greatly missed. Funeral service 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at THE EPSTEIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3232 E. Main Street, with Rabbi Michael Ungar officiating. Burial to follow at New Tifereth Israel Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at the Cohn residence Wednesday and Thursday evenings. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are preferred to the Columbus Metropolitan Library or the Columbus Chapter of the ACLU. Online guestbook at www.epsteinmemorial.com.

To the family of Jerry Cohn,
I was very fond of Jerry and respected his sense of morality. I had a professional relationship with Jerry that goes back 30 years. When I found out he passed away I felt he was too young and had too much to live for as a husband, father and grandfather. Jerry gave of himself and I know many people remember his sensitivety and commitment to others. May his memory be for a blessing!

Sending sincere sympathy to Susan and Jerry's fanily. I knew Jerry as a neighbor in German Village and through his work in the German Village Garten Club,

Papa Jerry

There must be an imbalance
in the world, an abundance of good
that you had too much to do with,
and so, from the yard
where you sat down and played in the
grass,
eye to eye with our children—
never content to look down upon them--
you are called away.
It was for them, after all, that you
yearned
and worked for a better world.

Godspeed, good heart. You endure
in us all.
