Margaret Stansbery Obituary

Stansbery, Margaret
1931 - 2018
Margaret "Peg" Dorothea Vanderzee Stansbery, passed away January 17, 2018 in Columbus, Ohio. She was born in Tarrytown, NY to the late George Boyle Vanderzee and Dagny Petersen in 1931. One of Margaret's greatest joys was teaching. She served in the Columbus City School District for 27 years and was a proud union member. She was a devout Christian and a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church for 40 years. In 1957 she, together with her husband Leslie E. Stansbery, attended the Ecumenical Institute in Geneva. This framed her global perspective and commitment to fight for the oppressed. She was quick to laugh, share her opinion, and loved sports. Peg treasured her family and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be missed by her husband of 60 years, Leslie Stansbery; sons, Mark (Yoshie), Paul and Todd (Nancy) Stansbery; and a daughter, Joy (Mike) Sickles. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible donations may be made to an endowment fund in the memory of Margaret D. Stansbery to promote education that has been established by a 501(c)(3) non-profit: the Community Organizing Center, 1101 Bryden Rd., Columbus, OH 43205-1821. Her family invites those who wish to celebrate her life to remember her on Saturday, January 27 from 12pm until time service at 1pm at Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church, 1450 E Dublin Granville Road, Columbus, OH 43229. To all who knew Peg, we would be remiss if we did not note the laughter, the passion and love she shared with us. From the many lives she touched teaching, to the camaraderie of her fellow teachers, to her friends and family, Peg will be missed. She was my best friend for years and I will miss the times we had cheering and distressing over favorite teams or complaining and applauding political actions. She listened and she offered opinions, whether you liked them or not. She was one for the masses to cherish for her hard work and endeavor for peace. For all the Stansberys, my deepest prayers and sympathy...

Les, Mark and Family members,
I had the honor of serving for many years on the Columbus Metropolitan Area
Church Board with Peg. She had a deep
concern for Social Justice and for quality
public education for all youth regardless of their street address. She was Champion
of working families and a fine person who
was concerned that all people be treated
equally and with respect.
