RIEDINGER Prof. Edward A. Riedinger, a specialist in international educational advising and Brazilian studies, has died. He was a member of the library faculty and the history department at The Ohio State University. Prof. Riedinger was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 26, 1944 and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. Most of his adult life he spent abroad, primarily in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was a faculty member at various universities in Brazil, Mexico, and the United States. From 1979 to 1988, he was Educational Advising Officer of the Fulbright Commission of Brazil at the American Consulate-General in Rio de Janeiro. There he developed a national coordination of advising centers for Brazilians wishing to study and do research in the US. He organized a regional association, the Working Group of US Overseas Educational Advisers in South America. Prof. Riedinger then aided in the formation (1985) of a world-wide organization of advisers, the Overseas Educational Advisers Group (OSEAS) within the National Association for Foreign Student Affairs (NAFSA) the world. He was a member of the executive organizing committee for the Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA), at the Univerity of New Mexico. The work described the presidential election in 1955 of Juscelino Kubitschek, the builder of Brasilia. Prof. Riedinger served as President Kubitschek's private secretary for English correspondence from 1972 to 1976. Other books by Dr. Riedinger included "Where in the World to Learn", which demonstrates the applications of information management to advising, the "Turned on Advising", a guide to computer and video resources for advising. He lectured, gave workshops, and did consulting on educational advising throughout Latin America and Europe. He studied in Catholic seminaries in Indiana. He recieved MA and PhD degrees in history from the University of Chicago and a masters in library and information science from the University of California, Berkeley. He pursued postgraduate work at Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge Universities. A recipient of numerous awards from Brazilian and US government and private agencies, Prof. Riedinger was a Ford Foundation Fellow, Fulbright Scholar, and a National Endowment for the Humanities and a Tinker Foundation grantee. At the time of death he was completing "Renaissance in the Tropics", a history of modern Brazilian culture. Burial was by cremation. I think of Ted often and of all that we did together at the OSU Library. Those were good times, for sure.

Ted was my favorite teacher at IBEU (Instituto Brasil Estados Unidos) in Rio de Janeiro (1972/77). American History and Literature. A great teacher and an exceptional fellow. It was an enormouus pleasure to meet him in Chigago in 1978. His lessons and considerations were gifts for the enrichment of English language and American Cutlure. Best memories. Saudades.

Ted was a cheerful and wonderful boss to work for in the Latin Studies Library at The Ohio State University. I'm a richer person having been in his presence for a short time. He was a rare and exceptional person for whom my words are not expressive enough. Godspeed sir.

I will miss you Ted. I didn't know you well but when you wrote reviews for my column they were wonderful. You were a gentle and loving man. Be at peace and may your family hold joyful memories of your life.

I very much enjoyed working with Ted and felt I was just starting to get to know him. He was a fun and very interesting person to get to know and I had a lot of respect for him and the work he did with Latin Studies. It was quite apparent that he had a deep passion for life and learning. I feel very sad that I will now not have the chance to have gotten to know him better. My sympathy to Ted's family and many friends.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Ted Riedinger. I have very much admired Ted's outstanding scholarly record, his extensive knowledge of South American culture, and his fostering of educational opportunities for foreign students to study in the U.S. I especially recall our conversations about his experiences in Brazilian government and his enthusiasm for Brazilian music, especially bossa nova. His passing is a great loss to academia and librarianship.

Ted and I shared many stories about French, Latin and African issues, especially politics, music and literature, and discussed ideas for projects on Afro-Latin topics. He shared more than his intellectual body of knowledge; in our suite, we will miss his presence and the candy bowl he so generously shared and assiduously replenished. Qu'il repose en paix.

A scholar, gentleman, esteemed colleague, friend, Ted was enthusiastic about life and ideas, and always ready to gladly share his thoughts and experiences. He will be missed but fondly remembered.

I've known Ted for a relatively brief period of time and have always felt the deepest of respect mutually given and received. Having grown up in a barrio in Phoenix, AZ, there seemed a sense of connection that his presence held for me. This presence will be missed. As a colleague, he represented the heights of scholarship. As a friend, he will always be of blessed memory.

Ted was always great company. In his last 20 or so years here at Ohio State, he made many friends and was responsible for the development of our Latin languages collection. I will miss him dearly.

"...Dans notre prochaine existence,
nous nous garderons bien d'être humains,
nous serons deux oies sauvages,
volant bien haut dans le ciel,
les neiges aveuglantes,
les mers et les eaux,
les monts et les nuages,
les poussières rouges du monde,
de loin nous les regarderons
comme si nous n'étions jamais tombés..."

This is a real loss for me, both personally and professionally. Ted was as decent a human being as I have known, and extremely knowledgeable and generous as a scholar and librarian.

Ted was a brilliant storyteller. He could speak for hours about life, history, Brazil, and a dozen other subjects. He will be remembered for his wit and humor, his knowledge and great learning, and his willingness to share information with others. Ted was a unique person, as anyone who ever saw how he decorated his office will confirm. He was one in a million and will be greatly missed by those of us who were lucky enough to have met him.
