Robert Teater Obituary

Teater Robert Woodson Teater (Bob) passed away on July 21, 2013 due to complications from Parkinson's Disease. He was cared for at home until the last few days by his loving wife of 61 years, Dorothy Seath Teater. He died at Kobacker House. He was born on February 27, 1 927, in Jessamine County, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents Buford Morton and May Scott Teater, grandson Joseph Perry Teater, sisters Louise Teater Jackson and Edna Teater Fain, and brothers James Stanley Teater and Charles Buford Teater. In addition to his wife Dot, Bob is survived by sons, David (Judy) of Spring Lake, Michigan, James (Nancy MacKimm) of Houston, Texas, Donald (Martha) of Clyde, North Carolina, and Andrew (Phyllis) of Hilliard, Ohio. Survivors also include 11 grandchildren; his sister, Lucy Teater Creech of Melbourne, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. From humble beginnings on a farm near Nicholasville, Kentucky, Bob went on to receive a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky where he was a member of FarmHouse Fraternity. He and Dot moved to Columbus in 1953 to attend graduate school. He earned, master's and doctorate degrees from The Ohio State University. A member of ROTC at University of Kentucky, he served as second lieutenant in Korea with the Army from 1952-1953 where he earned the Distinguished Service Award, Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. He retired as a major general with the Ohio Army National Guard, and served as a member of the Reserve Forces Policy Board in Washington, D.C. At The Ohio State University Bob was the associate dean of the College of Agriculture and director of the School of Natural Resources from 1969 to 1975. In 1975 Bob was appointed director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources by Governor James A. Rhodes where he served until 1983. He was then president of Teater and Associates, a natural resources consulting firm. He was the founder of The Wilds, an animal preserve in Muskingum County, Ohio. In 1991 Bob was elected as a member of the Columbus Board of Education and served three terms including three years as board president. He is a member of the Ohio Agricultural Hall of Fame, Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame, Ohio Natural Resources Hall of Fame, Ohio National Guard Hall of Fame, League of Ohio Sportsmen Hall of Fame, Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame and was Conservationist of the Year, awarded by the National Wildlife Federation. I was saddened when I learned of the passing of General Teater. I was fortunate enough to meet him when I was very young and my mother worked in Governor Rhodes administration. I always valued the time that he spent with me as I was growing up and the letters of encouragement he sent me when I enlisted in the Army. After becoming an Army Officer, General Teater continued to mentor me as my career grew and always welcomed me to his home with Dot when I came home on leave. He left a mark on me as a man and an Army Officer that I have carried with me my entire career. His life touched me and through me many thousands of Soldiers I have had the privledge of leading and serving with in my service. I will forever remember his love of country, selfless service, faith, dedication to community and his love of family. I was truly blessed to have Bob Teater enter and be a part of my life. V/r, COL Mike Pappas, U.S. Army

I only had the opportunity to meet Mr. Teater a few times, I fished with he, his son Andy and grandson Dan on his fabulous family pond and I have eaten some of his prized "gold" asparagus! As a father of 3 boys, the role of a father is one of great challenge and reward, as I am quickly learning. I have been told the greatest work a man can leave behind is proven through the foot steps taken of those that grew under his example. I have had the pleasure of knowing one of Mr. Teater's wonderful sons for sometime now. He is forever gracious, caring, responsible, funny and loving to his wife and children. If I can raise my young men to be half as wonderful as the men that Mr. & Mrs. Teater have rasied, I will die a happy man. RIP Mr. Teater and may those influenced by your presence pass the gifts on.

I am so sorry to learn of Bob's passing. As a long time Clintonville resident, I got to know them both from North Broadway United Methodist Church, as well as his activities with natural resources. He and my late Father, Dr. L. C. Chadwick, Dept. of Horticulture, OSU, had both been inducted into the Agriculture Hall of Fame, and were involved in a lot of the same things.

As I no longer live in central Ohio, I will not be able to attend the funeral. My deepest sympathy goes out to the Teater Family

I helped start a new Ducks Unlimited chapter in Reynoldsbug, Ohio. The Golden Marsh DU. Bo personally attended our first banquet and brought several friends to help us get started. He also had a duck blind off Onion Island, at Buckeye lake, next to mine for a couple of years. I flew him around a few times when I was a helicopter pilot in the National Guard. He was always very polite and considerate of the flight crews. I will miss him.

I knew him as Director Teater, he was a great teacher as well as an individual always eager to learn from others. I still can remember him asking about how to do No-till better on his farm southwest of Columbus. We will always remember and appreciate his works. I'm sorry I was out of town.

To the Teater Family,
We remember him as a great dad who taught and advised us; his grandchildren will always remember him as the grandpa who loved to share his garden and cook up his famous chicken on the open pit he had made....and so much more. He will be missed.

Dorothy and Family,

I just wanted to let you know that I am very sorry for your loss. Bob was great! I wonder if my dad would have been as kind and gentle as an old man, had he lived so long. Bob is in a better place! I am sure he and my dad have had a couple of laughs already, and maybe there is even a tractor up there for him.

We can dream about heaven until we get there ;-)

Please know that you and your family are in our prayers. There are times that we can truly celebrate for a richly blessed life.

Bob was one of those men that we were all blessed to call him a friend.

Both Bob and Dorothy served the people of Ohio in a manner all political candidates should note. They balanced the demands of family, along with the needs of the city, state and schools always improving everything in which they became involved. Bob, you will be missed but your legacy remains.

Bob Teater was a wonderful and a humble man. When he was on the Columbus School Board he nominated me for the Golden Ruler Award and I spoke to the Board. It was the one time that I saw Bill Moss smile and second the nomination. The Teaters were my neighbors in Clintonville and I would drop over on occasion just to say hi. They took me on a guided tour of their beautiful home, the Weisheimer Mansion. I will alway love Bob and Dorothy Teater...good people, who love Columbus and its people. Rest easy, Bob.
