John Fraim Obituary

Fraim John Fraim. Long-time Columbus radio personality, John Fraim, 90, died August 28, 2016 at the VA hospital in Dayton, Ohio. John was born March 28, 1926 in Indianapolis and was most recently residing in Circleville. He was best known as the morning radio personality on WTVN in the 60's and 70's. John was preceded in death by his parents, his son John, and wives Miriam and Vicki Fraim. He is survived by his two sisters, Lucy Achgill and Maryland Cladwell; and children, Steven, Stephanie and Amy. He was proud of his grandchildren, Kate, Jonathan, Scott, Mickey and Lily; and great-granddaughter, Alexis. John served in WW II as a radio operator on a B-29. He raced sports cars, and was an avid spelunker. He was a prolific writer and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize three times. John was one of three men who founded the Air Force Museum Foundation in Dayton. He was honored for that achievement by the Secretary of the Air Force this summer. As the morning radio personality at WTVN, John secured the highest ratings ever recorded for Columbus radio, a record that still stands today. John came to Columbus from Dayton in 1960 and became the News Director, and a few years later, the host of the morning show. He is remembered for the thousands of special reports that he wrote and delivered each morning. Private services will be held. Charitable contributions can be made to the Air Force Museum Foundation, Dayton VA Hospice, or the charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to Steven Fraim, 6211 Cheri Lynne Dr., Dayton, Ohio, 45415 or Stephanie Kight, 1548 Roxbury Road, Columbus, Ohio 43212.

I think of John often, and the fun we shared on and off the radio. He was a great friend, and we had many ventures together. Spelunking and going to the Indy 500 are just two of the many. A bright and funny man, we spent countless days together.

My sympathy to the Fraim family. As a newsman at WTVN in 1969-71, I worked with John and got to know him. He was a very bright and talented guy. I was single and far from home, so John invited me to share Thanksgiving dinner with him and his family in 1970. It was a very nice time and a kind and generous gesture I always remembered. I'm grateful I got to see him not long before he died. May he rest in peace.

I remember John from when he resided in Leveque Towers Columbus. I worked for State Representative Gilmore and was head of Security for Katherine Leveque. John was a great man and we became very good friends. R.I.P John you'll be missed by many. God Bless the family.

John was one of the first people I met at WTVN Radio in 1968. He has remained a memorable radio friend. I am so glad we had another - last chance - to reunite at a WTVN reunion this past June. I loved his stories about family and his adventures and will treasure the On the Air collection of his Special Reports. My sympathies and best wishes to his children.

John was the most interesting man I knew and worked with. He had insights on most subjects that made you stop and think about it in a new way. I am thankful we got 90 years of that, and sad at the same time. We will miss him

A wonderful part of my childhood memories. I always wondered what had become of him. A true Columbus legend.

Our family lived in Columbus and the radio stayed on 610 WTVN. When my husband was at work and our girls in school the radio kept me company and this was one of my favorite programs. Sorry for his family's loss.

My partner is gone, but he left me with a lifetime of memories. What a story-teller!

John and I go back to 1961 at WTVN Radio. He was an amazing talent with a unique personality. His writings will keep him alive forever.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words. Dad was a remarkable storyteller. He could take a simple everyday event like a slumber party or roll of saran wrap and turn it into a life lesson we all understood. We loved sharing our lives with all of you who listened to his stories in the morning. We will miss him and his interesting view of this amazing world. Love to all of you - Stephanie Fraim

Our Prayers & Sympathy to his Family - He is another "last" of a generation who was a "word-smith". Oh, how he could tell (relay) a story and make you a part of it. For a time he lived near us in rural Green Twp. & we enjoyed seeing him & his wife ride by in their convertible. We recently met up with him in Circleville & delayed his morning drive to buy a newspaper, while we discussed a few current events. He was kind , considerate & as articulate as ever. Quite a gentleman.

Regards,
Janet & Fred Duve

John Fraim holds a place of honor in Central Ohio's media hall of fame. John dominated the airwaves during a time radio and t.v. were the mainstream. His military service also deserves our praise.

My sincere condolences to the Fraim family. Amy, you might not remember me but I was part of the famous slumber party back in Jr. High at Westfall. We were so famous we were part of one of your Dad's special reports a few days later! Poor guy..I think we had him up most of the night! What great memories and so much fun on your beautiful farm. My prayers are with you all in the coming days and weeks.

My sincere condolences to the Fraim family. Amy, I'm not sure if you will remember me or not, but I was part of the famous "slumber party" back in junior high at Westfall. We were made "famous" by being a topic of one of your Dad's special reports! Such good memories and such a beautiful place you had in the country. My prayers are with you all as you adjust to life without your Dad.

My heartfelt condolences to the Fraim family. John Fraim was the first radio personality I ever listened to, and loved to get ready in the mornings with his calm, melodious voice coming through my transistor radio. He helped spur me to take up radio in college. He will be missed.
