Kevin Weeks Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 29, 2006.
Tempe officer Kevin Weeks had a passion for riding his police motorcycle and arresting drunken drivers.

“He died doing what he loved to do,” said Tempe police spokesman Sgt. Dan Masters.

Weeks, a 28-year-old traffic enforcement officer, died Thursday from injuries suffered when his motorcycle struck construction materials about 4:15 a.m. and crashed on southbound Loop 101, police said. He was riding his motorcycle home from work when he hit the lightrail construction materials placed off the main traffic lanes and he was thrown into a concrete barrier near Broadway Road.

Masters said Weeks used an on-ramp closed to the public but frequently used by patrol officers. The lane in which the crash occurred was separated from regular southbound lanes by the concrete barricades.

Weeks called 911 from his police radio after the crash and said he had gone down. He then told a cement truck driver who stopped to help that he was having trouble breathing, Masters said.

Paramedics took Weeks to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital, where he died. The death was the first in 20 years of an on-duty Tempe police officer, Masters said.

Weeks graduated from Chandler High School and lived in Gilbert. He is survived by a girlfriend, a sister and his parents, Masters said.

Weeks joined the Tempe department in 1999 and worked in the patrol division until June 2001, when he joined the traffic bureau. That same year, he was struck by an impaired driver while riding his motorcycle and suffered serious injuries.

But that did not stop him from doing what he loved.

“This reminds us of the risks our public safety personnel take on a daily basis,” Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman said during a news conference.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving honored Weeks in April as the organization’s 2005 outstanding police officer.

Sgt. John Butler, head of Tempe’s DUI task force, nominated Weeks for the honor, giving Weeks credit for 282 arrests and 2,100 citations related to alcohol and drug impairment.

“He proudly wore the uniform,” Masters said.

In an April 2004 letter written to Police Chief Ralph Tranter, Weeks also was commended for his participation in Tempe High School driver’s education program.

“Officer Weeks is very knowledgeable on traffic laws, DUI enforcement and relates very well to the high school-aged students,” wrote William Graham, director of Tempe Justice Court Teen Court.

Masters said Weeks laid his motorcycle on its side prior to the Loop 101 crash. The vehicle hit some large wooden beams that blocked the lane, and Weeks was thrown and hit the concrete barrier. Masters said darkness likely prevented Weeks from seeing the obstacles.

“Kevin was unable to avoid it, and the motorcycle collided with the material,” Masters said.

The beams were intended for eventual inclusion in a platform that would aid lightrail construction crews as they bolstered the Apache Boulevard bridge.

Weeks’ crash happened within a few miles of where Gilbert police officer Rob Targosz died on April 29. In that case, police arrested a man on suspicion of hit-andrun, red-light running and drunken driving. Like Weeks, Targosz was a DUI enforcement motorcycle officer.

The two fallen officers were friends. Last month, Weeks appeared on television wearing a pin with Targosz’s badge number to pay tribute to his friend.

Now Weeks also will be remembered.

“He was the type of individual who had a zest for life, was passionate for what he did and cared for people,” Masters said. “All of us were blessed to have known him.”

Want to help? The 100 Club has helped set up a “Survivor’s Fund” to assist officer Kevin Weeks’ family. The account at the Arizona Federal Credit Union is 468939, and will remain open for the next 90 days. Contributions can be made at any credit union in the state. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Kevin,
March always reminds me of you so I thought I would re-visit your page. I hope you are up there with my Dad cracking jokes (probably about me) and having a good time. I was just thinking about the times you would find it funny to pull me over on my way in to work the overnight shift and all of the other jokes you played on me. I can't believe it's been so long. You are not forgotten, my friend.

Kevin,
Five years ago today we lost you. Not a day goes by that I don't feel the greatest loss. We love you, cherish your memory, and look forward to "someday". I look into the eyes of your beautiful German Shepherd and remember you. It gives me such peace to know that I can care for him like you would have. I love you!

Happy Belated Birthday, Sir.

Can't believe its been almost five years since our paths crossed that morning.
I think about it often. Too often.
The replay of my call to 911 haunts me in my nightmares. I still hear your voice.
I wish I could have done more for you. I hate myself for being the last person you spoke to. Anyone can see that you have such a beautiful and loving family...you deserved better than me by your side.

I am so sorry. I wish I could make it right somehow.

To your mother, sister, and everyone who endures the pain of missing you everyday...I don't know what to say. My words can't help you, I know. If ever there were an opportunity to do anything for you, please know that I would not hesitate to do so.

As always sir, I'll see you in September.

Kevin,
I still think of you always and remember your cute grin. I have to smile when I think of all the times you swooped in and found the bad guy/gal to hand over to Patrol. You were taken from us way too early and you are missed a lot! Todd is struggling to recover from his wreck and, I'm sure, would have loved to have had you at his side, helping him. Then again, maybe you are there with him! I thank you if you are watching out for him and keeping him company during his dark times.

Kevin,
Happy 31st Birthday today. Not a day goes by that we don't feel the pain of loosing you. We are taking Mom and Dad to see a Padres Spring Training Game today. We will feel your presence there I am sure you have a seat right behind home plate. We love and miss you so much.

Everyone talks about "closure" and "moving on" but there is no such thing when your heart is hurting so much. I can't wait for the day when I can see you again. I will promise to do my best until that day comes!

With All My Love,
Caryn

I'm a police officer in Temple Terrace Florida. On May 10, 11 and 12 of 2007 I will be riding in the Police Unity Tour for Ofc. Weeks. I will represent him and his family at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington DC. I'm currently wearing a metal band in his honor and will ride with it during the 250 mile tour. I will present it to his family if they are in attendance. I never knew Ofc. Weeks but I'm honored to carry his name and memory with me on the journey. Rest in Peace Ofc. Weeks, your Brothers in Blue honor and remember you always.

Just a friend

October 20, 2006

I have thought many times of you Kevin...I have wondered about how things were going in your life. When I first heard I couldn't believe it. I still don't want to. I know that you are forever gone and it hurts to know that I will never see your face, except in pictures or hear your voice again. I know it's been a long time since we had the chance to talk but you always had a way of making the bad things seem not so bad. You were there for me when times were hard and I thank you for that. I have wanted to tell you somehow how important you were to me but I think you already know now. The people that really knew you, the real you, knew just how you did things. You weren't afraid to put it out there. No matter who heard it. You told it like it was and that was one of the things I admired the most about you. I couldn't stop the tears at your service. That was definately one of the hardest things I have ever been through. I can't imagine how Courtney is doing. I want to thank her for making you so happy. You needed that. You deserved that. The rain at the end of your service was fitting. I knew it was you. You will be forever in my heart Kevin. You told me once that it wasn't gonna happen if I didn't make it happen. So I am gonna make it happen, for you. I will do what I can to get it done this time. I know you are helping me. A song I know you loved comes to mind...
Cause the love and the laughter will live on long after all of the sadness and the tears, we'll meet again my old friend, goodbye.

Goodbye for now Kevin...until we meet again I will feel better knowing you are watching over us from above.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

As my favorite poem states...

"God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference"......

Paula, Alan and Caryn-
Kevin was both a courageous and wise man, a true hero that walked among us. I pray that comfort finds you and somehow eases your pain. Please know that I am always just a phone call away and that you are all in my thoughts and prayers...

Kevin-
It has been two weeks since your accident and I still can't believe it. I thought I would be ready to come to this page and write something, but as I sit here and the tears stream down my face, I suppose I will never be truly ready. There are so many lives that you saved, so many lives that you touched. You will never be forgotten and I know that your strong ambition to get intoxicated drivers off the road will forever live on amongst your brothers and sisters in law enforcement. We will not let your torch burn out. I thank God for your friendship and will miss you very much. You will always have a special place in my heart…

Until we meet again, rest in peace...

As the poem goes:

Do not stand and my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep.

.....

Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.

Kevin will never truly die as long as those who knew him, worked with him, were friends with him and loved him keep him in their hearts and minds. I for one, having worked on both sides of the aisle with him, will do both.

Kevin, I hope that Motors in Heaven ride all day long in perfect weather.!!!!

Kevin...you taught my HGN/DUI class. I worked with you on accidents, Dui's etc. I met your family at the WET workshop for our HGN training. You are a stellar officer and a great friend and a co-worker I always looked up to. My heart goes out to your family!

I remember you and Bacon calling me to "hang out" numerous times....I wish that I would have been able to more.

I feel truly honored to have been an usher at your honored service on Thursday. And will always remember your compassion for work, and life!

As a Tempe Officer, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your dedication and patience to everyone you encountered.

May God protect and watch over you, your family and friends.

Officer Weeks came in to speak to my fraternity at ASU a number of times about DUIs. Tempe PD and Officer Weeks family has suffered an immeasurable loss. God Bless You Officer Weeks. Ride your motrcycle proudly in heaven.

Kevin was an honorable policeman & exceptional motor officer. The memories he left with all of us will continue to bring a smile through the rest of our designated time. His energies in his DUI mission will always motivate his fellow officers, and remind those of us on the other end of the radio to have patience -knowing they are carrying on a difficult task. Thank you to the Weeks family for allowing us the opportunity to share in the life of your son.

I can't even begin to express the loss that we feel now, much less come December when we kick off the holiday DUI Task Force. I have had the pleasure of working with Kevin during the East Valley DUI Task Force for the last few years that he has been with the DUI squad. I remember the night of Rob's funeral we had Task Force and I've never seen Kevin more dedicated and sure of his mission. I'm not sure if I ever saw him sit still the whole night! Kevin loved his job and he was good at it! We will miss him terribly! This year at our December Task Force we will be down two officers but I know that Rob and Kevin will be watching over us and making sure we are all safe!

To Kevin's Family, we thank you for sharing him with us on the holidays so that he could be out keeping the streets safe for us all. To Courtney, please know we have enjoyed the opportunity to get to know you over the last few months and hope that you will continue coming out to the Task Force.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. We will never forget Kevin and that sly little grin of his and the funny things he always had to say. God Speed Kevin.

It was not until today that I was able to find the words to truly honor Kevin's memory. After having read through several of the entries on this guest book, and attending the funeral today, one word seems to be prevalent: hero. It is without a doubt Kevin was a hero, but he was so much more. With as many lives as he touched and the impact he made on the Tempe community and the state of Arizona he was a legend. Kevin epitomized what it is to be an officer and set a spectacular example for every officer no matter what his or her career goals. I know he has impacted my life and I only hope I can live up to the standards he has set. My prayers and thoughts go to him, his family and all those who have had the honor of knowing and caring for Kevin. Always remember, heroes can die, but legends live forever!

Police officers are honored warriors and they are remembered for their bravery and concern for their community. A community feels the loss of one of their own. Mr&Mrs Weeks and family, our family wish to express our sincere condolences to you at this time of terrible loss of Kevin. Having read all the entries of people from all over that have been touched by Kevin in his short life, we are overwhelmed. Kevin attended school with our two children, Scott and Elizabeth, at Andersen Jr High School and Chandler High. I remember Kevin coming to our house to shot basketball with all the friends our kids had in common in Andersen Springs. I particularly remember Kevin announcing Chandler High Football games and doing such a fine job. I think Kevin was the type person who could have done anything he wanted to do and been successful. To my surprise, he chose law enforcement. But what a job he did! These guest book entries from people whose lives have been touched by Kevin is unrefutable evidence that Kevin was a total success in his chosen field. People are alive today because of what Kevin did for them. Many of us will live long lives and never be able to say that we had such an impact on others that Kevin had in his short 28 years! Our hearts and prayers go out to you in this terrible time, but you never have to worry about the quality of the life you have brought to us and shared with us in knowing Kevin. His history is written, but he will be remembered by all of us who were fortunate enough to know him and call him friend. Kevin, well done, young man! God Bless you all!

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

It has been about 2 years since the last time I saw Kevin. I knew from our first introduction he was a person who took his job very seriously and was the type of person built to help those around him. My heart and prayers go out to his family, Court, and everyone who has been affected by this loss.

To Caryn and family and all whose lives were touched by Kevin. We did not know Kevin but knew about him through our daughter Kim, who always spoke so highly about him. Our family would like to extend our most deepest sympathy. May God comfort you and hold you in the palm of His hand.

Although I did not know Officer Weeks, I am deeply grieving over his death. I have yet to recover from the death of the last officer in nearly the same location. Thank God for wonderful men like Kevin who put their lives on the line to protect the citizens in the Valley. My prayers and condolences go out to his family, friends, and fellow officers.

I"d been wondering how to express my respect for Officer Weeks. I served on a jury this summer and I was so impressed with his sincerity and dedication to his job. What a terrible loss of our community.

I had the privilege of attending a class Kevin taught. He had a great sense of humor and a terrific knowledge of what he did best (DUI's). My family's thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and department.

To his family I will not send my condolences. I will instead extend my thanks. I met Kevin shortly after he joined TPD. He was a true example of the type of man who should "wear the Badge". He did the "job" for all the right reasons. I thank you for creating and supporting such an inspirational man. Kevin was and shall always be remembered as a true protector.
