I was very shocked to hear that Horst has passed away; far too soon. I have fond memories of him when he was interning at St Peter's in Winnipeg. We had some great conversations and became good friends in the process. My parents adored him. Rest in peace thou good and faithful servant. Until we meet again.......

I've just received the copy of my Heritage Review from Bismarck and saw with great sadness that Horst passed away last December. We were distantly related via my Lang family and were in regular Email contact. I had wondered that no Christmas message had arrived but now I know why. Horst was a very helpful and generous man with an enormous wealth of knowledge. He will be sadly missed by many people but foremost by his family. May you rest in peace and watch over your family.

I encountered Horst through many of his offerings on the e-mail train pertaining to Germans from Russia. His entries were always so intelligent, full of information and interest. We only had one telephone conversation and it was a doozy--very long, detailed, lots of mutual stories, laughter and joy. He was very honest about his health challenges. The news of his passing is sad indeed. I wish I would have known him in a different way and long ago.

I just mailed off a package to Horst this forenoon only to find out quite by accident this afternoon that the Lord had called him home early in December. He was a dear brother/friend in the confessional Lutheran faith, a contender for the truth who regarded not the ecclesiastical bureaucracy but the Lord and His Word as the inspired Truth. We had spoken of getting together in 2017 in Barrhead, and we still may; but now it shall be in heaven. I shall miss him greatly, especially our wonderful telephone conversations. May the Lord bless his beloved mother and other family members, and may He also bless the dear sheep of the flock. May the box of books be beneficial to the family and congregation. God be with you all. (From one of his United States connections.)

Dear Alexander,
I was so very shocked and saddened to hear of your father's passing. Your father was a great pastor who helped me better know and look to Christ at all times. His love and joy in the Lord always shone through when I saw him. His absolute delight in you was also evident.
I remember the first time I met you. You were about two and visiting Edmonton from New York. Your father preached at St John's and I went to listen. After the service I was waiting to chat with him and he was talking to some other parishioners about you. He looked around, found you close by, swept you up in his arms and proudly presented you to the group he was talking to. It was a touching moment to see a man so in love with his son and grateful to the Lord for his good blessings. Your dad was just beaming with love and pride because he had you. I was very touched.
I know you will miss him terribly and I pray that the Holy Spirit carries you through these difficult times.

It was difficult to learn that Horst has already left us. He will be missed by the Russian-German community in the San Francisco Bay area and across California, where he was valued as a speaker, translator and friend. Condolences to Alexander and other family members.

To all the members of the Gutsche family
My sincere condolences on the passing of a truly remarkable individual. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Pastor Gutsche, we had been correspondents for over twenty years and shared a great many documents relating to the history of the Lutheran Church in western Canada. We also had some fabulous telephone conversations, often discussing his connections to various members of my family, particularly at St. Peter;s Lutheran Church in Winnipeg and St. Johns in Vernon, B.C. I know he shall be very sadly missed by a great many people who appreciated his remarkable qualities. "A great man passed this way!" Felix G. Kuehn, Winnipeg, Manitoba

It is with great sorrow that we learn of the sudden passing of our good friend Horst Gutsche. Horst was instrumental in translating countless important documents and also did so much other genealogical work for the Volhynien community in Edmonton and else where. Horst's tireless work and help will be missed and may the good Lord direct Horst to assist us from above with our quest in finding information on our ancestors from Volhynien and any other place in Eastern Europe. I had met Horst only once in person a few years ago when we decided to compile a Biographical directory of clergy in Alberta's German-speaking communities: From the 1880s to the present", but then we spoke dozens of times on the phone and exchanged hundreds of emails. I got to know Horst as an exquisitely knowledgeable, gentle, compassionate man. I have lost a dear friend in him!
