William Pidruchney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 9 to Jun. 13, 2010.
PIDRUCHNEY, William T. (Bill) LLB., Q.C. Shevchenko Medal Alberta Centennial Medal December 17, 1932 - June 3, 2010 Bill died peacefully after having a stroke two months ago. He had many highlights in his life. The greatest of these: the stimulating company of friends and family; community service; and the beauty of the outdoors. Bill was a U of A Economics and Law graduate, then a Lawyer in Edmonton practice. He was also previously a Scoutmaster, a Pilot Officer in the RCAF University Reserve Training Program, a writer for "Edmontonians" magazine, a proponent of multiculturalism, and a founder of Skateboard Edmonton Club. He was involved with the Provincial Museum, the Ukrainian community, and the Gandhi Foundation, among other worthy organizations. He loved cruising around the countryside in his station wagon, kayaking a little and taking photographs; and of course, arguing politics. He was married for 30 years to Florence (nee Cerezke). Bill is survived by his children Cornell (and family), Janine, Marina (and family), and Lisa; sisters Lillian, Avreillia, and Myroslawa, and their families. He is also survived by his loving companion and sweetheart Peggy Hutchison Louis. Predeceased by his parents William and Anna Pidruchney of Vegreville and sister Zenovia Irvine. In keeping with Dad's wishes, there will be no memorial service. Cremation has taken place. "Place no headstone; my monument shall be your memory of me. I need no grave, for I belong to the elements. The happiness that filled our lives leaves no room for grieving. To honour me, do an act of kindness to another in need." Letters of Remembrance may be sent to the family at 2337-85 Street, Edmonton. T6K 3H1. South Side Memorial Chapel. Patterson, Mittelstadt & Justik. (780) 432-1601. To send condolences visit, www.southsidememorial.com

I am saddened to hear of Bill's passing. My condolences to his family. I am a skateboarder who was a member of the Skateboard Edmonton Club. Even though Bill had no previous involvement with skateboarding, his sense of justice and fair play motivated him to use his experience and influence to go to bat for our community which had no public voice at the time. I still laugh remembering how Bill mischievously relished being a thorn in the City government's side on our behalf! haha He was a kind, warm man, who was much younger than his years so he was a lot of fun too. I'll miss him. Since Bill was the catalyst that got public skateboard parks finally built here, it would be appropriate to name a local skateboard park in his memory.

Many, many years ago Bill and I both worked for Allstate insurance. When I started a small business against his advice he was my lawyer. Over the years we kept in touch at Christmas. I always looked forward to his card that he had created with one of his photographs. I'll miss reading about Bill's efforts to make this a better place to live. Condolences to the family.

I knew Bill for over 40 years as a fellow practitioner. More recently I admired his fortitude in his battle with the City of Edmonton over the utilities. And he always had a warm smile.

Bill was a fellow member of the Lakewood Estates Condo family. He was a good neighbour. I enjoyed our chats in the parking lot and at the recycle bin. He is now enjoying beautiful scenery in sunny weather on calm waters. Will miss you Bill.

Like many others who knew Bill, I had the opportunity to be on the committee with him on the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation.Edmonton has lost a good citizen, who volunteered his time & efforts to make this a better place for all of us.

We were so sorry to hear of your loss. The thoughts of many are with you at this time of sorrow. As Bill use to tell me, just a little more left rudder. I still think he could have been King of Canada....

I had the privilege of getting to know Bill when I was a summer student for the Gandhi Foundation in 1992 and 1993. His contributions, as an Edmontonian and Canadian, have made a difference to many lives. My condolences to his family. He will be missed by many and leaves a void in the community that will be hard to fill.

Bill had so many accomplishments that were not mentioned in the obituary. It is my hope that many people will remember all the excellent partakings of his personal, political and friendly life.
