Donald GROOT Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Dec. 16 to Dec. 17, 2016.
GROOT, Donald "Don"
Dr. Donald (Don) William Groot passed away peacefully on December 11, 2016. He was predeceased by his parents, Eva and Simon and his brothers, Jack and Jerry. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia, his sons, Erik (Catha) and Tim, his siblings, Jim (Ev) and Beth (Gary), his sister-in-law, Sandy and several nieces and nephews.
Don completed his BSc and MD at the University of Alberta, graduating from medicine as a gold medalist. He specialized in Dermatology becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Canada) and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He was a pioneer in the field of dermatologic laser surgery, a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Alberta, an international educator and a member of the Edmonton Oilers' medical team. Among his many achievements, he established the Groot DermaSurgery Centre in Edmonton where he practised for over 30 years. He embraced life with his enthusiasm for fly fishing, flying, sailing, scuba diving, mountain climbing, hiking, hockey, skiing, astronomy and travelling. His greatest joy was his family with whom he shared his love of life and all the opportunities and experiences it has to offer. Like the North star, his light will continue to shine and will be a beacon for others to navigate through their lives for many years to come.
A celebration of his life will be held in the spring when the trees are in bud, the flowers are in bloom and the brown trout are biting. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Johnston Family Endowment Fund at the University of Alberta in support of research to find a cure for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Diseases (uab.ca/JohnstonFamily) or to a charity of your choice.

Dr. Groot was my dermatologist for a few years in the 80s. He was using leading technology back then, and i'm happy i was fortunate enough to be his patient. He was extremely professional, easy to talk to, and quick to diagnose my concerns and offer his recommendations. I learned some golden nuggets of wisdom from him, that is still pertinent to this day. Bless your soul Dr. Groot, you made a positive difference in many lives.

I saw Don at his downtown Edmonton clinic in the mid 80's and was curious what he's up to nowadays. Found this obituary and am deeply saddened. He WAS the best dermatologist in Edmonton when I was seeing him. A very gentle man who always smiled, even while he was treating me with nitrogen while doing the procedure. He will be sadly missed forever by the dermatology association. My personal condolences to his family.

Shocked with disbelief and saddened to hear of Dr Groots passing. He was the finest doctor I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I met Dr Groot during his travels with his portable laser as he treated an infant severely burned in Lethbridge. He was a humble kind man who restored my faith in humanity. I am at a loss for words. Unfortunately, I left Alberta and moved back east. I only recently heard of his passing. He always spoke highly of his family especially his two sons. My sincerest condolences to his family - he surely was a great role model and will be sorrilily missed by many. I will plant a tree in his Honour in the Lion's Foundation Memorial Forest.
Blessings,

I am so very sorry to hear of this memorable man's passing! I was a patient of his. I vividly remember one visit (with my toddler in tow) how absolutely captivated he was with her and how he engaged her in the visit also. Dr. Groot was a compassionate and caring man...a family man as was evident by the many photos of his family's adventures on his office walls. Please accept my deepest condolences.

August 4, 2017

I only just heard of Don's passing. I was so shocked. My condolences to the family. Just a quick story of how I met your Dad and husband. He had just gotten his first laser machine. His was the first one in Edmonton. It was in a closet at RAH. When he gave me my first treatment I was his third patient for laser treatment. I had to crawl up on the bed and then he came in, sat on the end of the bed, then closed the door-it was that tiny! Over the next 40 years Don gave me my treatments around my eyes periodically-usually every 2-5 years. I will miss him!

It breaks my heart that I never quite found the right words to say while you were still here. I thanked you but I never felt that it was enough.

I had been in an accident in 2010 that nearly took my life and left me with severe scarring. Because of this I was burdened with constant stares of curiosity or questions and I was incredibly ashamed. I met with Dr. Groot, shared with him what had happened and he immediately treated me starting that day for no charge and continued to see me for 2 years until my scarring had completely faded.

I was ready to give up and this man, who did not even know me, truly saved my life. His kindness gave me hope at a time when I was completely hopeless. He gave me a second chance. My life has since blossomed into everything I could have ever hoped for and I attribute it greatly to Dr. Donald Groot. His selflessness and compassion brought me to my feet and I have been standing tall ever since.

I give my most sincere condolences on your loss. He was truly one of a kind.

I was a patient of Dr. Groot. He was so kind and such a lovely person. I was so impressed that he had pictures of his family throughout his centre . He really loved his family.
I liked talking to him and my mom (in her 80's at the time) saw him
for a skin cancer on her face - and had it taken care of. She had been a nurse and told me what a wonderful doctor he was. He was so kind and would really listen to your concerns and answer all questions. He was a true doctor- full of compassion and caring.
I'm so sorry for your loss. He was such a wonderful person.

Having been a past employee of Groot Dermasurgery, I have never been treated so wonderfully by any employer as Dr.Groot and Patricia. Dr. Groot was kind, appreciative, generous and unselfish to both his patients and his staff. He spoke so happily of his wife, children and family. I especially remember one wonderful Christmas memory... We were all treated to a fabulous dinner at Murietta's, whenone by one large white boxes with blue ribbons on them were delivered into therestaurant for us Girls "The Lazer Blazers". Inside were beautiful fluffy whitehousecoats! I will never forget my time working with Dr. Groot and Patricia and often tell people stories of theirkindness. I will never forget you Dr. Groot. Farewell, my dear cousin. Donny was the kindest of cousins, never teasing or pulling my hair (unlike a few others I could name!). I grew up and moved away from Edmonton and we lost touch as cousins sometimes do in large families, but this news of his passing brings back so many memories. He treated my mom throughout her life and was so kind to her, particularly in her elder years. What a sad loss this is. My condolences to Patricia and your sons. From your cousin Lorna

Captain Dondo!

The car trips and life lessons are in the past, memories to look back and cherish even more now.

I don't think I ever would have known the wonder of catching a fish with an unbarbed fly high in the mountains if it weren't for you.

And that one time when we shot your Pavarotti CD to pieces in the yard, sure you got mad, but you held it together and showed us how to express loss and frustration with an authority to respect.

I think of you often even though I haven't seen you in far too many years. You had an impact on my life and helped to shape the better part of me.

I gotta admit, I'm bummed that I won't get the chance to see you again and introduce my little blonde rug rats and better half. You know how you hope you'll bump into someone someday and have that splendid moment of rekindling past memories that fade with the patina of time.

You done good Don. Done good.

Sorry to hear of Dr Don Groot's passing away, it's very sad. I still remember my very first visit in 1984, he prescribed me one tiny ointment and I never since had any problem with my skin. He was truly the best dermatologist and human being that cared for his patients. I still continued my appointments on and off and only several years later my daughter needed Dermatalogist and I took her to the Groot clinic. Amazing Doctor that worked Miracles, I will always miss him. My condolences to Patricia and his children.

I think of the many years since First Edmonton Place where I met him. Followed him till he retired. It will be very difficult to find a Doctor who holds a candle to this man. What a blessing he was.
