Robert Serrano YHS Class Of `75
June 29, 2023
I met Julio in German 1 class when he was a Freshman at YHS and I was a Sophomore. At the time, he was only 5´9´ or so and nice as can be but also quite unassuming.
Though we never shared a classroom again, I kept up with him throughout high school. He had a growth spurt his Junior year and began excelling on the hardwood. He shot up to 6´6" his Senior year and was unstoppable. Teams would double and triple team him, yet he managed to achieve all-district 2-AAAA and The El Paso Times City Player of The Year in 1976! Through all that, he remained the same unassuming, polite guy as ever. He never lost his temper even with 2 or 3 players draped all over him.
Rest In Eternal Peace, Julio - and than you for these wonderful memories I carry with me to this day.

Julio Gallardo as a basketball player was so talented. My brothers and I watched Julio in Christmas tournaments in Silver City NM where he was the best player on court by far. He was introduced to crowd with a cheerleader under each of his arms as the announcer would sing "Hooooooleeeo GUYardo" and then the fans would be in for a treat. Julio was the man!

Julio Gallardo was the best coolest basketball player to come out of El Paso. He dominated the Christmas tournament in Silver City and came out on court during warm ups with perfect hair and a cheerleader under each arm. RIP to the ultimate basketball player.

Mr Gallardo, one of the best mexican players of all times in Mexico. I remember the 1987 CIMEBA championship game between Dorados and Puebla in Chihuahua. Julio Gallardo (playing with Puebla) was the best player that night cutting 6 straight Dorado's championships. God Bless you,

Tio, I know I didn't visit you often, but you were always in my heart <3. You were and amazing basketball player and not because you were tall, but because you played with heart <3. Any NBA team would be lucky to have you. I wish I could have seen you play and I also wish you could have seen me play. As I continue to play basketball I hope I can play with as much heart as you have played with. Your up there playing Heaven's Team. And every shot I make or every block i do, just remember it's all for you. I love you <3

My sincerest condolences to the Gallardo family. May Julio rest in peace and may the perpetual light shine upon him. While I did not personally know Juio I cannot forget how good a player he was in high school. My father used to be the head coach at Coronado in those days and he would stay up trying to come up with a defense to stop Julio from getting the easy basket. When I told my father the sad news this evening he remembered how good a player Julio was as well as a good sport who represented his community well. May our good Lord hold Julio in his hands and give you all peace. Vaya con Dios Julio.
