Frank Funciello Obituary

Frank J. Funciello, Sr., 93, of 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville, formerly of 2065 Old Hershey Rd., Erie, passed away Saturday, October 1, 2016, at the Marquette Hospice House.

Frank was born in Meadville, on October 26, 1922, a son of the late Luco and Virginia (O'Valetta) Funciello.

In 1951, Frank married Thora Miller Delfft; she preceded him in death in December, 2010.

He attended St. Peter's Cathedral, Erie.

After several years of service, Frank retired from GE of Erie. Following his retirement, he and his wife opened and operated the Blue Star Tavern in the borough of Platea for many years. A WW II veteran, Frank joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Boise. He served his country honorably from March 12, 1943 until his discharge on February 15, 1946. While in the Navy, Frank boxed, a sport for which he quickly became passionate at the age of 17. He fought under the name of Johnny Hurricane DunDee out of the cities of Hartford, Conn. and New York City. Frank was a member of Waterford American Legion Post #285. Among his hobbies were fishing and making wine.

Frank is survived by a step-son, Albert Delfft and his wife, Carol of Springfield; a daughter-in-law, Judy A. Delfft of Erie; nine step-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren, several step-great-great-grandchildren, two sisters, Lucy Dividio, Mary Hovenac, both of Meadville; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, Thora, Frank was preceded in death by a son, Frank John Funciello, Jr.; a step-son, James Delfft; two brothers, Louis Funciello, Dominick Funciello; three sisters, Theresa Fera, Elizabeth "Betty" Yurisic, and infant Luci Funciello.

Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 from 2-4 and 6-8 at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 10:00 a.m., with Fr. Johnathan Schmolt officiating.

Following Full Military Honors, Frank will be laid to rest next to his wife, Thora, in Erie County Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Marquette Hospice House, 464 Pine St., Meadville, PA 16335.

The Blue Star Tavern...We use to ride our snow mobiles and this was one of our favorite stops! They provided a warm welcome always and comfort food. Great people. They will be missed.
