Myron Jones Obituary

Radio and TV Pioneer

Myron Jones, broadcast pioneer, age 92, passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at St. Vincent Hospital. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio on November 27, 1925, a son of the late Isaac and Wilhelmena (Reinhardt) Jones.

Myron was the retired president, chairman and CEO of the WJET Broadcasting Company – and a legend in local broadcasting. He owned WJET radio and WJET-TV in Erie, radio stations in Youngstown and Pittsburgh, and, briefly, a television station in San Antonio. He has won numerous broadcasting awards and recognitions for his success and positive impact on the communities he has served. His influence was especially felt while serving on the boards of Gannon University, Mercyhurst University, and Penn State Behrend.

Jones played a dominant role in broadcast talent development in Erie and beyond. Many successful broadcasters and business executives had received their initial training at Jones' stations. His life and career have been a model of ethics in business to employees, friends, clients, competitors, and the general public. He was a consummate gentleman, a professional and a humble man. He has often been referred to as "the nice guy who finished first."

In addition to his parents, Myron was preceded in death by his first wife Kathryn (Pfadt) Jones, his brother Lawrence "Larry" Jones and a sister-in-law Patricia Mohr.

Survivors include his beloved wife Marlene (Sullivan) Jones, his stepdaughters, Atty. Claudette Miller of Chicago and Kathleen "Katii" Mele of Chicago; his step-grandchildren, Violet Mele and Dante Mele, both of Chicago; a brother-in-law, Thomas P. Sullivan, wife Charlene of Williamsburg, Va., and a sister-in-law, Brenda Ackerman, husband Don of Erie.

Friends are invited to call on Monday from 3 to 7 p.m., at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Blvd. Services will be held there on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m., at St. Jude the Apostle Church, Msgr. Thomas J. McSweeney as main celebrant. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Condolences may be expressed at www.bruggerfuneralhomes.com

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Departments of Communication at any of the academic institutions mentioned above would be profoundly appreciated.

I felt very fortunate and humbled by Myron when he needed to hire an electrician. I got to know him after several visits to his home, and found we had a common interest in old radios and shortwave. I will never forget our interesting conversations and his vast knowledge of technological subjects. Always kind and a gentleman, I am quite certain he will be sadly missed by anyone who had the privilege of knowing him, especially me. My heartfelt condolences to Marlene and his family, and until we meet again, farewell my friend. God Bless.

The world has lost a true gentleman. Myron was one of the kindest people I have had the pleasure to know. His belief in what we do and his encouragement of others to believe in us too will never be forgotten. It is an honor to have spent time with him. Our condolences to Marlene and your family and friends.
