Hughes Ash Obituary

LILLINGTON - Retired Lt. Col. Hughes Lanier Ash Jr., of Lillington, expired quietly at home Sunday, July 25, 2010, after a lengthy illness. Lt. Col. Ash was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He retired from the Army in 1988 with 32 years of meritorious service, receiving numerous awards and commendations, including the Bronze Star. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2010, in Adcock Funeral Home & Crematory chapel in Spring Lake. Burial will be in Flat Branch Presbyterian Church cemetery in Bunnlevel. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight, Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at the funeral home. He is survived by his wife, Jo Stone-Ash, of the home; his son, Hughes Lanier Ash III, daughter-in-law, Jennifer, and grandchildren, Lanier, Ansley, Harper and Emory Ash of Louisville, Ky.; his sister, Tommi and brother-in-law Rick Ward of Greensboro, Ga.; and stepchildren, Karen and Michael Ash. Surviving aunts and uncles include Roger E. Ash of Middleton, Tenn., Thomas E. Edwards of Rochester, N.Y., Virginia A. MacAllister of Smyrna, Ga.; Dorothy E. Moore of Atlanta and Louise A. Riddle of Dahlonega, Ga.; surviving nieces and nephews include Eric Smith of Prattville, Ala., and Michael Smith, Tony Smith, Ashlie Miller and Joey Ward of Greensboro, Ga.; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and a multitude of military and civilian friends.
