Alan Aycock Obituary

FAYETTEVILLE - Alan Aycock, 30, of Fayetteville, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013, in Duke University Medical Center, after a battle with liver cancer. Mr. Aycock was the owner of CAA Design, a downtown Web design company located in the Callahan and Rice building on Franklin Street. He was previously a customer service technician and supervisor for Advanced Internet Technologies. Mr. Aycock and his service dog, Baylor, were a regular sight in downtown Fayetteville. Mr. Aycock was the longest surviving lung transplant patient from Duke University Medical Center who had received lungs while a pediatric patient, as he survived more than 17 years post-transplant. Mr. Aycock was selected as a Duke Children's Classic Champion in 1998, and played a major role in the fundraising activities with host Jeff Foxworthy. He was also very active in fundraising for the WRAL Radiothon in support of the children at Duke. Mr. Aycock's story was featured in the book "Fathers and Sons" written by Todd Richisson published nationally by Running Press. The award-winning Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser, JulyFest, in Liberty County, Ga., was inspired by Mr. Aycock's story and relationships. Mr. Aycock was a lifetime active member of First Baptist Church in downtown Fayetteville, where he was a leader of the Royal Ambassador Program. Before moving to the Fountainhead Condominiums, he had been president of the King's Grant Condo Association and was largely responsible for ensuring they returned to financial solvency and changed management. Mr. Aycock is survived by his parents, Maj. Gen Al Aycock, the former Garrison Commander of Fort Bragg, and Sue Aycock of Fort Belvoir, Va.; a sister, Jennifer Aycock Peebles and her husband, Staff Sgt. (Promotable) Dan Peebles, of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; grandparents, Roland and Margaret Padrick of Hinesville, Ga., and retired Lt. Col. Charles and Anne Aycock of Holden Beach; uncles and aunts, Steven Aycock of Charlotte, Shawn and Leigh-Anne Royster of Burlington, Al and Jennie Padrick of Hinesville, Ga., Don and Lois Padrick of Hinesville. A memorial service for Mr. Aycock will be held in First Baptist Church at 201 Anderson St. in downtown Fayetteville at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2013. Following the memorial service, the family will receive visitors in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church. Interment will be at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Baptist Church Young Adult Ministry, 201 Anderson St., Fayetteville, NC 28301, that was so important to Mr. Aycock's life, are welcome. The measure of a man is not how long he lived, but what he did while he lived. From all that I have seen and heard, Alan lived his life fully and positively touched people every day. Children are a gift from God, loaned to us so we can teach, mold and better their lives. The Aycock's clearly did this well and now he has been called home. Most cannot begin to understand the pain and our families thoughts remain with you daily.

Roland & Margaret Padrick & The Aycock Family:

I remember Alan as a young boy when he and his family would visit First Baptist Church of Hinesville. This was in the early years of his battle with Cystic Fibrosis. There was always a smile on his face and he was always an encouragement to our family. He will be missed by all, especially those he touched later in life. The Aostle Paul wrote in 2nd. Timothy these words: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." Alan did just this. May God bless all of you and give you peace as you go through these difficult times.
