1914 - 2013

Harry Carl Soukup, 99, most recently of Kenosha, Wis., and formerly of Venice, Fla., passed into eternal life on Dec. 22, 2013, at Brookside Care Center.

He was born to Rose (Solfronk) and Frank Soukup on Oct. 2, 1914, in Chicago, Ill. He was the fourth of six children.

In 1939, Harry graduated from Armour-Institute of Technology in Chicago with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering. During his years in college, he worked at the Carnegie Illinois Steel Company. Upon graduation, he moved to Fond du Lac, Wis., where he was hired at Giddings & Lewis Machine Tool Company. He stayed with Giddings & Lewis his entire professional career, retiring in 1977 as Chairman of the Board and Managing director of Giddings & Lewis Fraser, Ltd., in Arbroath, Scotland.

It was at Giddings & Lewis, where Harry met the "love of his life," Margaret Anderson. They were married on June 21, 1941, at Immanuel Trinity Lutheran Church. Together they raised five children.

Harry was active in the Fond du Lac community, serving in many leadership capacities in the Kiwanis Club, the United Way, South Hills Country Club, the Vocational, Technical and Adult Education Board and Immanuel Trinity Lutheran Church.

In 1988, they settled in Venice, Fla., where they were active at the Mission Valley Country Club, Jacaranda Country Club and the Venice Presbyterian Church. In October of 2013, Harry moved to Kenosha, Wis.

Harry was devoted to his family and to his wife of 68 years. Margaret preceded him in death in 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and his daughter-in-law, Joyce Soukup. He is survived by his five children, Thomas (Sharon) Soukup of Sarasota, Fla.; Ellen (Eugene) Brookhouse of Kenosha, Wis.; Richard Soukup of Madison, Wis.; Pamela (George) Thomas of Columbus, Ohio; and Jan (David) Partin of The Colony, Tex.; a brother-in-law, Milton Anderson of Lake Villa, Ill.; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jean Aspatore of Fond du Lac, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

My deepest condolences to the immediate family. I unfortunately believe I only met my Great Uncle Harry once that I remember. He attended his brother (my grandfather) Frank's funeral in Ohio many years ago (1977?) when I was around 11. I recall at the time how much he and his brother Emil looked like my grandfather.
Ironically, my mother (Frank's daughter Gloria and Harry's niece) received word Harry was residing where I live in Kenosha. When my parents came in from out of town December 24, we made our way to visit him Christmas morning. Unfortunately we found out when we got there he left us only a few days earlier.
May God Bless Harry and everyone who knew this great and remarkable man.

My condolences to all the Soukups. Hard to lose a parent, even at age 99. He raised one of the most vibrant families in Fond du Lac. He had a lot to be proud of.

Mr. Soukup was one of the machine tool people to affect my life.
He was a man I looked upto and wanted to be like in my quest to climb the ranks of G&L.
My condolances to his family.
