Iner Nielsen Obituary

Iner Enoch Teman Nielsen passed away peacefully Saturday, May 14, 2011, surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was born on October 8, 1921 in Granville, Illinois.

He was a devoted husband to Mary Virginia Cowling for 67 years. He is survived by three children, Mike (Bernadette) of Endwell, NY, Sandy (Gary) Clark of Johnson City, NY, and Linda (Danny) McKnight of Rockledge, FL. His son, Stephen, predeceased him in 1954. Iner was a loving grandfather of 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Iner moved his family to Brevard County in 1956 when he went to work for Northrup, Fairchild and Avco at Cape Canaveral, and later with IBM at Kennedy Space Center. He retired in 1982.

In 1942, Iner enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he served proudly until 1946. He was an Engineer on B-29s in World War II as well as a Pilot on P-51 Mustangs. He was with the 6th Bomb Group (B-29s) in the Pacific; thirty-six hours after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki he flew as part of the first photo reconnaissance mission over those cities.

Iner was a member of First Baptist Church Cocoa for 55 years. He taught Sunday School Class for fifty years which he did until just a few weeks before becoming ill. He was a devoted Christian who truly was an example of 'walking the talk'. He was a strong, quiet leader for his family and so many others; he will be missed dearly.

Visitation will be on Thursday, May 19, 6 - 8 pm at the Florida Memorial Chapel on US 1 in Viera. Funeral will be Friday, May 20, 2 pm at the First Baptist Church Cocoa with a graveside service at Florida Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers please make any contributions either to First Baptist Church Cocoa, 750 Brevard Ave., Cocoa, FL 32922 or Sentinels of Freedom Space Coast, 4250 N. Wickham Rd., #103, Melbourne, FL 32935.

There was a time in my life that I thought Mr. Nielsen would be my father-in-law...sadly, he wasn't, but I never stopped loving him and his beautiful family. My parents were dear friends of the Nielsens, with many from First Baptist. He made an impact on anyone who was fortunate to have known him. My love & sympathy to Virginia, Mike, Sandy, Linda and their families.

We were all blessed to have been given the opportunity to know such a Godly man. I am also blessed to know his children, Mike, Sandy and Linda, who all carry on the legacy of love entrusted to them by their parents. I thank the Lord for his example, his servant leadership, that has impacted so many lives. He is, indeed, receiving his rewards for a life well lived, and hearing the words "well done, my good and faithful servant". May God comfort you all as you carry on without him. I share your sorrow.

I've never forgotten Mr. Nielsen as my Sunday School teacher at the age of ten. The "word" was that he was the one you wanted...that he was "nice". I couldn't get over how perfectly spot-on that scuttle-butt was.
My dad taught there for about 50 years.
Memories of Mr. Nielsen, and the First Baptist Church, bring
a lump to the throat.
