Robert Lizer Obituary

Robert Lizer

Indialantic, FL

Robert "Bob" Sidney Lizer, 89, of Indialantic, FL died November 28, 2013.

He was born August 11, 1924 in Williamsport, MD to the late Charles and Dorothy Lizer. Bob graduated from Williamsport High School in 1942, received a BA in Education from Western Maryland College in 1949, a MS in Education from Western Maryland College in 1952 and a MLS from the University of Maryland in 1967.

During World War II, he served with the 710 Tank Battalion and was attached to the Marines at times. He saw combat in the Pacific theater at Peleliu and Angaur in the Palaus Islands and Leyte in the Philippines.

In 1955, he married Bonnie Sowers. They lived in Baltimore, MD, Williamsport, MD, and Hager town, MD before relocating in the Melbourne area in 1989.

Bob was a high school English teacher in Baltimore for 20 years before transferring to the school library department. He retired in 1977.

He was an avid birder, enjoyed canoeing and traveling. At the age of 15, he went alone to the 1939 New York World's Fair. In 1979, he traveled around the world with a backpack. His travels took him to Mexico, Africa, Europe, Australia, throughout the United States, Canada, and several Latin American countries. After Bonnie retired in 1989, they saw the world together. Much of their traveling was done in their RV.

Bob was a life-long member of the Potomac Fish and Game Club in Williamsport, MD. For years, he studied Spanish with a local group of friends and daily watched a Spanish language telenovela.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, Bob is survived by his sister, Nancy Lizer Burger of Williamsport and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the National Parkinson's Association, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, New York 10018.

The ashes will be entombed at a U.S. National Cemetery, Florida. A Celebration of Life will be held after the first of the year.

I think of you and Bonnie often and am thankful to have had you both in my life.

I met Robert Lizer twenty three years ago. I had the pleasure of sitting at a round table with him and two other veterans while on break from a Spanish language class we had taken. The World War II stories shared at that table were fascinating and were told with reserve. Thank you Bob for your service. Thank you also Bob for tutoring me in Spanish and sharing your methods and techniques for learning. You were able to answer every question I had not only about Spanish but about birds and birding as well. You taught me more than I learned with two earned college degrees when you asked me the question, "What is the first word you see on this page". I know your former students would like to say thank you as well. You had the style and grace of a great teacher and librarian. I will miss being able to live vicariously through your adventurous travels. You were a can do and did king of guy. I will miss you and will never forget. Rest in peace. My condolences to Bonnie.
