Thomas Bankert Obituary

PHELPS - Thomas B. Bankert Sr., 82, a lifelong resident of Melvin Hill, passed away peacefully on Thursday (August 5, 2010) at the Clifton Springs Hospital with his family by his side. He had fought a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Monday (Aug 9) at the Cheney Funeral Home, 70 Main Street, Phelps. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday (Aug 10) at St. Francis Church in Phelps. Private burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
It is requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Buckhorn Sportsman's Club Building Fund, 39 North Wayne Street, Phelps, NY 14532.
Mr. Bankert was born on May 27, 1928, son of the late Prosper and Flora Champagne Bankert. On June 28, 1947, he married Betty Reid. Thomas retired in 1984, after 40 years of service, with the American Can Company in Geneva. In addition to his full time job at the American Can, Mr. Bankert also farmed many acres as a cash crop farmer and was then later known for his delicious varieties of sweet corn.
Thomas and his wife enjoyed traveling, spending many winters in Florida and Texas. In addition, after his retirement Mr. Bankert was able to enjoy a number of cruises and travel to a variety of European countries. In his younger years he loved to hunt and trap, while in his later years Mr. Bankert enjoyed visits to the Finger Lakes Racino and just being with his family, whom he so loved and was so proud of.
Mr. Bankert is survived by Betty, his loving wife of 63 years; children, Debbie (Charlie) Dhalle, Tom (Kathy) Bankert; grandchildren, Shawn (Brian) Peisher, Melissa Dhalle, Michael Dhalle, Rob (Wendy) Burri, Jeff Burri, Lisa (Chris) Orlando; great-grandchildren, Hannah & Franki Peisher, Dominique, Devon & Bryce Burri, Sydney & Mason Jones, Jackie & Cody Creech; brother, Robert (Sandy) Bankert; sisters-in-law, Margaret Bankert, Genieve Hand, Eleanor (LaVance) Dorgan.
He was preceded in death by two brothers - George and Paul Bankert.
