CLIFFORD SCOTT Obituary

CLIFFORD HALEY SCOTT PH.D, 78, of Fort Wayne, passed away Monday, June 6, 2016 at home. Born in Independence, Iowa, he was the son of the late Clifford H. and Mabel Scott. Clifford worked as a professor with IPFW from 1968 to 2001, retiring in 2001. He received his B. A. from the University of Northern Iowa in 1959, and his Ph.D in American History from the University of Iowa in 1968. He taught for three years at Southeast Missouri State University before coming to IPFW in 1968. During his undergraduate years, he worked summers for the U.S. Forest Service as a fire lookout and for the National Park Service as a Ranger Historian. He served as chair of the IPFW Department of History in the late 1970's and 1990's, wrote a biography of Lester Frank Ward, and numerous history articles. He was past president of the Indiana Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, and of the Fort Wayne Fortnightly Club. He was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, a founding board member of the Withers Fellowship Foundation, a principle founder of the IPFW Honors Program, and served many years on the board of the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 48 years and was an Elder of the church. He was a happy man who loved his family, nature and the pursuit of knowledge. Surviving are his son, Christopher (Jean) Scott of Dayton, Ohio; daughter, Kimberly Scott of San Jose, Calif.; grandchildren, Michelle and Mitchell Scott; and a sister, Angela Tegan of Iowa City Iowa. He was also preceded in death by wife, Joyce Scott. Funeral Service is 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at D.O. McComb & Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Road with calling one hour prior. Calling will also be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at the funeral home. Burial in Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Memorials may be made to the Withers Fellowship Foundation or The Nature Conservancy.
