Our most heartfelt sympathy is extended to the Sunderman family. We were neighbors years ago and the children played together and were close friends. As just neighboring parents, we admired how well the Sunderman children behaved and were taught, which was due to the wonderful father (Jack) and mother.

Dear Jeanette and family, I am truly saddened to hear of Dr. Sunderman's passing. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I have had some phenominal and inspiring teachers in my life, but he was, by far, the best. He was truly inspiring as a mentor. He showed me how to revel in seeing the 'light come on' in the eyes of his and later my own students. He was the man and teacher I always wanted to be. Truly a great human being. I have never forgotten him and how he helped make me the person I am today. Thank you Dr. Sunderman.

I knew Jack here at IPFW for almost eight years. I often saw him post-retirement at Fort Wayne Children's Choir performances. I count myself very fortunate to have known him.

My path and Jack's have not crossed for many years, but I have watched carefully and with great interest the many contributions he has made to knowledge of the geology of Indiana.

I was fortunate to be a geology student of Dr. Sunderman's in the early 1980s. He was a marvelous and gifted instructor. His instruction in the field was laden with insightful and telling observations and he drew out the best in his students.
My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

I have known Jack since 1970, as a colleague and a friend. He started the Dept. of Geosciences at IPFW, and was instrumental in the early development of the Department. We shared many geological field trips. He was a great field geologist, and an exceptional educator. He will be missed tremendously by all who knew him. My condolences to Jeanette and his family. We share with you this great loss.

Jeanette and family,
Jack was more than a 'best educator' for me... he was my friend. From 1982 to today, I always enjoyed speaking with and learning from Jack. From the many trips to the Grand Canyon, Colorado, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and down into southern Indiana, Jack shared his deep love and appreciation of geology and the out-of-doors with all who knew him. He will be missed.

Dr. Sunderman was an educator of extraordinary ability and a gifted field geologist, who captured the hearts and minds of countless students over multiple decades. He was supportive and encouraging in and out of the classroom and his work ethic was unsurpassed; yet he always found time for friends, family and public service. How sad it is to hear of his passing but how inspiring to realize how many lives he positively influenced. My personal condolences to Jeannette and family. As a member of the extended geo-family, I share your grief while I celebrate his memory and the legacy he leaves behind.

Dr Sunderman was a great man who did much for the many people he encountered. He has left a great legacy with the many students he has taught through the years. He gave me a great love for geology that has given my family a good life. Because of what he passed on to me, my daughter has also discovered the same love for geology. May God bless him in eternity and give his family peace.

Jeanette and family: I am so sad for your and our loss in Jack. I still use his I469 route of travel when showing people the geology of the area. He and you were always treasured folks that brightened even a chance meeting in the grocery. Jeanette: a group of former DPW folks meets once a mnth just to spend some time together and you are welcome to join: [email protected]. Wishing you deepest of condolences. Fred Gilbert

We will miss Uncle Jack very much.
I have submitted a photo from the last family gathering we had at mom and dad's house before mom was gone. I think we didn't realize at the time how precious these gatherings were. I remember fondly earlier gatherings at Sandy's house for the Fourth of July and Uncle Jack and my husband Dave talking about Jack's digs and findings. It was so interesting, and the family reunions were a very special time.
Uncle Jack will be missed, bless his gentle heart and soul. I am so glad that he went so peacefully and did not suffer, and was doing something that he loved.
With much love from Teri and Dave Uttermohlen, and Mike, Tom and Lauren

The last time that I saw Dr. Sunderman was the Monday after Easter in 2006 when he surprised (and honored) me by attending the lecture that I gave that day at IPFW on the making of the Yale Peabody Museum's Torosaurus sculpture. It was great seeing him again and his presence there really made my day. He told me then that he was in great demand at retirement homes and such giving lectures on mastodons to the general public. Dr. Sunderman was a gentleman in every sense of the word and I will always be grateful for the things that he taught me at IPFW. The world is a much poorer place without Jack Sunderman in it. The Sunderman family has my deepest sympathy on their loss.

A sad day for me and the multitude of geology students he taught at IPFW. He was my mentor, my friend, and the absolute best teacher I ever had all through undergraduate and graduate school. His love of teaching showed through in every thing he did and in many ways he is the man responsible for putting me on the path of rediscovering my inner scholar and made me the science geek I am today. He will be missed but never ever forgotten.

I was one of the faceless students in two of Dr. Sunderman's classes at IPFW, but he was a professor I will remember. A great teacher and a very nice man. His enthusiasm for science was infectious. My condolences. Thank you, Dr. Sunderman, for teaching.
