MICHAEL WAGGONER Obituary

MICHAEL BRUCE WAGGONER, 52, passed away on Monday, March 15, 2010, 4 a.m., at M.D. Anderson Hospital, Houston, Texas, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Born Aug. 25, 1957, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, he was the son of Felix and Doris Waggoner. He attended school in Fort Wayne until his family moved to Knapp Lake. There he attended West Noble High School, graduating in 1976. After high school, he went on a cross country scholarship to Michigan Christian College in Rochester, Mich. While there, he was named to the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1978, graduating with an Associate Degree in Science. Continuing on, he entered Freed-Hardeman University on a cross country scholarship and received a Bachelor's Degree in Communications as well as a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing. Upon completion of his education, he started his career at Dubois Chemical Company then on to Western Water Systems and finally an 18 year tour of employment with Eco Labs. All of his positions involved sales and service of chemicals and industrial water treatment equipment. He excelled at his work, winning numerous national awards. In 1997 and in 2000, he was second in the nation as a water care specialist. He was also named Mid-South Budget Buster of the Year. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, father, and husband. "He always had a smile on his face and could always make you laugh." At the age of 14, he accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized while attending Camp Indogan, by Brother George Welker. "He was faithful to the end. He will always be remembered as being honest and a man of his word, winning the respect of both friend and client. He had a big heart, helping care for his elderly in-laws, adopting the boys and providing for his family. He was always more concerned for the welfare of others than his own. He will be greatly missed by all." He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Meladie of Germantown, Tenn.; two sons, James of Fort Knox, Ky. and Jimmy of Germantown, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Mel of Memphis, Tenn.; mother, Doris Waggoner of Kimmell, Ind.; one brother, Larry of Kimmell, Ind.; one sister, Debra (Jimm) Nidlinger of Terre Haute, Ind.; nieces and nephews, Jared and Cason Nobles of Dyersburg, Tenn., Gina (Mark) Ernst, Jimm Jr., Cody, Christian, and Jayme Nidlinger, all of Terre Haute, Ind., Chris (Angie and Tori) Waggoner of Roanoke, Ind.; and extended family and friends, Kerry Nidlinger of Terre Haute, Ind., Dennis and Sherry Nidlinger (Brett, Jeff, Jon and Tara) of Fort Wayne, Cheryl and Mike Person of Houston, Texas, Kevin Daymon of Michigan, and Mike and Debbie Bireley of Terre Haute, Ind. He was preceded in death by his father, Felix Waggoner; brother, Rick Waggoner; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mel and Addie Belle Nobles of Germantown, Tenn. Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Yeager Funeral Home, 1589 Lincolnway South, Ligonier, with Minister Dave Phillips of Germantown Tennessee Church of Christ officiating. Dear Meladie, James, & Jimmy –

I was deeply saddened to hear of your husband/father's death. I worked with him in the capacity of computer support for the last 15 years and we've shared many long conversations over the years. We shared not only as brothers in Christ, but also as adoptive fathers (my wife and I have five adopted children – all about your ages James & Jimmy).

Mike's humility and dedication will always stand out to me. He has left a hole. I will be missing his ever-consistent voice mail byline: Mike Waggoner, Ecolab Memphis.

My wife Cheri shares in my grief for you, and in my prayers for the three of you. May our Lord hold each of you close to Him in this time.

I am sorely grieved to learn that Mike has passed. He was a great friend of mine at college. The obituary that says he was faithful to the end is very comforting. It is also comforting to know that he did well at his job and had a loving family. I am so sorry to the family who must be hurting and will be hurting for a long time. Sure wish I could have reconnected with him on earth, but I'll look him up in heaven.

I knew Mike at Freed-Hardeman. He always helped any of us who had car trouble, always with a cheerful attitude. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Meladie and boys, I never had the privilege of meeting you; but I have known Mike for over 20 years. He shared an apartment with my brother and another friend of theirs back in the 80s. One Christmas Mike didn't go back to Indiana; and we invited him to come down and spend Christmas Day with us. He got to know the whole family and we all enjoyed having him there. When my Dad had surgery in Memphis several years ago, he was there to show his concern for us. Many times when he came through Ripley on business, he stopped by to visit me at work. He stopped by sometime last year, but he never told me he had any health problems. When I heard of his death, I was truly shocked. You all have my sincere sympathy in his passing. He was truly a great person and a joy to be around.

I was saddened to hear the news of Mike's passing away. He will be missed by myself and fellow employees at Turner Dairy that had the privilege and pleasure of knowing Mike. Mike was a very personable guy who truly cared about people. I can certainly appreciate his sense of humor for the lighter side of life. Our thoughts and prayers will be with his wife and family.

I met Micheal through the water treatment business he was in, during the early 90s. He brought pizza to the guys in the shop, and we became friends through business and his hobby.
One night we hauled his old pickup to Jackson, TN to have some work done on it. We had a great time, then soon after he joined the Chevy Club, which I was also a member. He was always a great friend and will greatly missed.

We did not know Mike well, but was always aware of his & Meladie's faithfulness to God. We pray for Meladie and the boys in this sad time. We know they take comfort in knowing he is in a better place where there is no suffering. Bob & Pat Poston (Columbia, TN, former members of Germantown church of Christ.)

I am saddened to learn of Mike's passing. I got to know Mike from his association with the Single Adults class at the Sycamore View Church of Christ, back when he and Meladie met and started dating. He was crazy about her then and all through their marriage. What a funny guy he was too. Always had a dry joke or two to share. Sorry we hadn't kept in touch over the last many years. May God Bless the family as you deal with this huge hole in your heart. He was a sweet guy to all that knew him.
