WILLARD DETWEILER HUNSBERGER, died Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Green- croft Health Care in Goshen. He was known as "Ted" to Fort Wayne friends, and "Willie" to college friends. He was born July 19, 1926, son of Earl Heacock Hunsberger and Estella Detweiler. His stepmother was Sara Detweiler Kulp. He grew up in Souderton, Pa. and attended Blooming Glen Mennonite Church. During World War II he served in Civilian Public Service Camps in Virginia and California and at the Rhode Island State Mental Hospital. He graduated from Goshen College in 1950. He also received a M.Ed. degree from Temple University, and an M.A. in Library Science from Florida State University. The family spent six years in Guam where he served as teacher and librarian in the Guam School System. In 1968 he became Librarian at Indiana-Purdue University in Fort Wayne, retiring in 1991. He married Ann Raber in 1951. They were divorced in 1974, but continued to stay in touch with each other over the years. In 1976 he married Pauline Farquhar, a librarian coworker at IPFW, and the mother of 4 children. She died of Multiple Sclerosis in 1996. The children, Mary, John, Paul, and Patricia live in Minnesota, Colorado, Michigan, and Kansas. In 2000 he married Virginia Oberley, the mother of nine children from a previous marriage. She died in 2006 of Pancreatic Cancer. Eight of the children, Denise, Matthew, Ted, Kenneth, Mark, Stewart, Philip, and Timothy, all of them in the Fort Wayne area, survive. Despite disappointments, he continued to enjoy life through traveling in the U.S. and abroad, and especially singing. He was always involved in some singing group, quartet or chorus. While a resident in Fort Wayne he sang in the Philharmonic Chorus. At Greencroft he sang with the Evergreen Singers. He is also the author of two books, "The Franconia Menn-onites and War," 1951, (his senior thesis at Goshen College), and "Clarence Darrow: A Bibliography," 1981. He was a great admirer of Clarence Darrow, an internationally known defense attorney from 1890-1930. Darrow defended over 2,000 people, many of them for free. He is survived by his daughter, Patrice of Fort Wayne; and son, Terry of Fort Wayne. Terry is married to Lois Kaufmann from Tiskilwa, Ill. A brother, Harold lives in Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his sister, Kathryn in 2007; and brother, Earl in 2011. Memorial service is 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2012, in the Koinonia Room at College Mennonite Church, Goshen, with calling one hour prior. The cremains will be deposited into following locations: next to Pauline's urn at Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne, next to Virginia at St. Louis Besancon Catholic Church (east of New Haven), and also scattered in the Greencroft Gardens in Celebration Park.
