Shirley Thompson Obituary

Shirley A. Thompson

DURHAM - Shirley A. Thompson, 80, of Mill Pond Road, died peacefully at her home on January 31, 2014, after a short illness.

Born January 29, 1934 in Dover, she was the daughter of Norman and Marion (Kelley) Stiles. She resided in Durham for most of her life, graduated from Dover High School, Class of 1952, and attended Keene Teaching College.

Shirley began her long and dedicated career in public service to the Town of Durham and the Oyster River School District over fifty years ago. She began volunteering with the ORSD when Kimmy was small, as a supervisor of the playground. She went on to be a math and reading tutor in the classroom, was a Moharimet Elementary School tutor for 20 years, and helped with the women's soccer team. She served on the School Board for 13 years, was an assistant moderator of the school district, served on the Scholarship Committee, and received the Principal Association Award. Shirley's greatest pleasure was reading to the children at Moharimet Elementary School.

During the 80s Shirley served as a Selectwoman for 13 years. She was a member of the Durham Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary for 18 years, and served as Chairperson for 7 years. She was involved in fundraising, auctions and spaghetti suppers. For 9 years she was a school crossing guard with the Durham Police Department, and was Fire Commissioner for 2 years. Shirley was named Durham Citizen of The Year, and was an assistant Moderator of the Town of Durham.

She was a member of the Durham Budget Committee for 7 years, serving 3 years as Chairperson, served on the Zoning Board, Planning Board, Conservation Committee, Cemetery Committee, Parks & Recreation, and Trustee of Trust Funds. Shirley was also a part time secretary at the Town Office.

Shirley was also a member of the Durham/UNH Communications Committee. She would often say: "It was an absolute good journey" and "My focus has always been on kids".

Shirley was the recipient of the Foster's Point of Light Award.

She was a person about Town and could be seen at her grandchildren's sporting events, at Young's discussing Town and school issues, or at any school or town meeting.

She was a member of St. George Episcopal Church, Durham.

Shirley's family hosted her 80th Birthday Party this past Sunday. It was attended by many family and good friends.

She was predeceased by her husband Murell "Tommy" Thompson who died in 1991.

Shirley is survived by 2 daughters, Norma Jean Hallett and her husband Mitch of Springfield, Illinois, and Kimberly Laughton and her husband Richard of Durham; 5 grandchildren, Jessica Laughton, Lindsay Gagne, Richard J.M. Laughton, Aaron Hallett and Alana Hallett; her sister, Norma Boch of Montock, Long Island, N.Y.

Gorwing up in Durham, I remember Shirley as the crossing guard - she would keep an eye on us kids, and if I was doing something wrong, my mom found out. As a mom myself, now I appreciate that so much more than I did as a teen - it really does take a village and Shirley Thompson was a vibrant, involved active part of Durham. The town is better for having a citizen of her caliber! My condolences on your loss.

How we will miss seeing Shirley around town and her infectious optimism and positive can-do attitude! She was a force of nature and our community has lost an amazing advocate for our kids.
We are so grateful to her for everything she has done for Durham.

There isn't much else to say that hasn't already been said. One in a million lady who touched many, many hearts and will be missed greatly by a lot of people. You sure earned your wings to fly among the angels a million times over. God Blessed Us when he gave us you. I know I am asking God to bless you and your family. ?

She was a force of nature! Loved her community and her people! I never saw her when she didn't have time to chat and she was always animated and cheerful. Durham has lost one of it's Best.

This is such a loss for our entire Durham and Oyster River community. Shirley was always a delight to see anywhere in town. Our own kids loved her, and every student that I introduced her to always smiled and had a great talk with her! She was full of life and cared so deeply about the children. We will miss her greatly!

My family moved in next door to Shirley 4 years ago and we will miss seeing her in her "silver dove" cruising out to volunteer at the school or the voting stations. I would catch her striding out in the neighborhood, hands on her hips and a smile on her lips and we would catch up on the goings-on And she knew EVERYTHING going on in this town! I will miss her insights and fire. And as committed as she obviously was to the community, she was even more so to children. "It's all about the children," she always said. She was such an advocate and always had a ready ear for any of my four kids who would wonder over to chat. We will miss her energy and her open, generous heart.

Shirley was one of the most positive people I have known. Although always "in the loop" about whatever was brewing in town, she approached every challenge with energy toward a solution, not complaint. I will miss our conversations about her sweaters and her "Goodwill" successes. She was one of a kind, is what she was!

To Shirley's family: I'm so saddened by her passing! She always looked to what was best for the kids at Oyster River, even if it wasn't the 'popular' vote. She and my dad, Al Elwell, served on the school board together for years and there was such a mutual respect. One amazing woman and friend! May you rest easy but still keep an eye out for all the 'kids' of Oyster River. Say hi to my Dad & Mom!! Love you!

Shirley influenced our lives in Durham. She called and asked me to run for School Board and I told her "no"; I couldn't stay awake for the meetings. "Well, what about Bill?" and the rest is history. She loved sweaters and pins and was a major example to us on how to be good citizens.

I met Shirley when both of us were on neighboring school boards. We would run into each other at Youngs or at Goodwill and swap war stories. Shirley gave so much to the children of Durham. I am sure she is reading to the children in Heaven now.

I am so sorry for your loss. Shirley was so kind to my son Casey. He would plead with me to go to Young's Restaurant just to see if Shirley was there. She would always have a book in her car for him but it was the hug, her smile and words of encouragement he loved the most. She was an amazing person and loved by so many. Her courage, strength and love will continue on in all of us, especially her grandchildren of whom she was proud and spoke often of.

Shirley was an inspiration. She supported so many children through her reading at Moharimet, speaking in classrooms and tireless support of sports. She inspired a generation towards public service and continued past her time of public volunteerism to guide those who continued her work. She is Granda Shirley to many, and a dear friend to all.
