Virginia Champlin Obituary

Virginia Spaulding Champlin

Virginia Spaulding Champlin of North Andover, Massachusetts died Wednesday, December 17, 2014. She was born to the late governor Rolland Hardy Spaulding and Vera Going, January 6,1921. She is predeceased by William Hilton Champlin Jr, her husband of 51 years.

Tradition has played a large part in Virginia's life. Summers were spent in Chatham on the Cape. She also enjoyed many weekends at Timber Island on Lake Winnipesaukee. Timber Island has now been given to the Guilford Conservancy. Switzerland was a favorite winter destination.

Virginia and Bill Champlin had a long custom of giving back to Rochester, their home for many years. Champlin Forest, Homemakers Health Services, Frisbee Memorial Hospital and Trinity Anglican Church were some of their recipients. Her other philanthropic beneficiaries included Spaulding Youth Center, the Champlin Scholarship fund at the University of New Hampshire and the Crittenton Women's Union.

Virginia is survived by her sister, Betty Haas of Santa Barbara, California. As well as her six children: Susan, Carrie, Jane, Vera Lynne, William, and Rolland, 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Trinity Anglican Church or any of the charities mentioned above.

A service will be held at the Trinity Anglican Church, 180 Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, NH on December 27 at 11 a.m. in Rochester, N.H.

Arrangements are under the care of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main Street, Rochester, N.H.

To Virginia's children and other family members. Pleas accept my heartfelt sympathy. I have know her since I was a child. The last time I spoke with her was at Church of The Redeemer. As usual she was her gracious self. The Spaulding and Champlin families were Rochester. Their many contributions to this city are well known, but many are "unknown". It was always nice to see the flowers on the altar at Trinity Anglican Church, several times a year from Virginia. No matter her "status" in life she was kind to everyone and that is how I remember her. Have a "beautiful journey" Virginia and God's Blessings on all your family. "May the Lord make His Face to shine upon on you, and give you Peace."

In the annals of Rochester, the Spaulding and Champlin names epitomize accomplishment, generosity, integrity, and stature. From the earliest years of the 20th century, through the Depression and WWII into the 60's their factories provided desperately needed jobs for thousands of workers. My father, with his portable sawmill, fine woodsmen and horses, harvested hundreds of woodlots in Maine and NH to provide lumber for Champlin Box and Lumber Company. The verbal agreement and handshake of a Champlin was far stronger and better than any written contract. Also, I vaguely recall (1939?) when W.H. Champlin had My father help clear land near Haven Hill for a small airstrip to foster the unbounded love of flying held by his youthful son Bill who served in the Marine Corps during the war and later took over the family business. Thank you to these fine and wonderful people for what they did and stood for.

To the Champlin Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Champlin's passing. The Champlin's have been a very important part of my church, Trinity Anglican. I never got the privilege of meeting her but I did speak to her once on the phone when I was President of the Women's Guild. Mrs. Champlin was always "behind the scenes" but her presence was greatly felt.
Thank you, Mrs. Champlin, along with Mr. Champlin, for caring so much about Trinity. God bless you.

To the Champlin family, I am sorry for your loss. I never met your Mom or Dad, but I am well aware of their generosity to the city and citizens of Rochester. Their walking trails, the land for the Homemakers, and their work with Frisbie have not gone unnoticed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
