DAYLE MOLEN Obituary

Dayle passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2010. He retired in 1990 as a Professor Emeritus at California State University, Fresno, after a quarter-century of teaching journalism. He was a former president of the Fresno Press Club and the local chapter of Society of Professional Journalists. The CSU Fresno chapter of Kappa Tau Alpha, the national journalism honorary society, is named in his honor. He was born on November 22, 1921, in Arco, Idaho and grew up in Great Falls, Montana. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942, serving as a Sergeant with the First Allied Airborne Army in Europe. He graduated from University of Idaho, Moscow, in 1947, and began an 18 year newspaper career, holding reporting and editing positions at daily newspapers in Lewiston, Idaho; Great Falls, Montana; and Pueblo, Colorado. He later worked summers on The Fresno Bee copy desk. He began his teaching career after earning a Master's Degree from the University of Oregon in 1965, and taking a job at Fresno State College. He also co-wrote a widely used college textbook, "Interpreting Public Issues," and wrote periodically for Montana Western History magazine. His life was spent as a good, honorable, respected man dedicated to family and friends and to his beloved cadre of journalism students, who now carry on the tradition of the careers he carried out for himself and which he dearly loved. He is survived by Lorena R. Molen, his wife of 60 years; three sons and daughters-in-law, Stan and Debbi Molen of Clovis, Kirby and DeAnn Molen of Tollhouse, and Logan and Sandra Molen of Bakersfield; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Services will be private. Memorials may be made to the Dayle H. Molen Journalism Scholarship Fund, c/o CSU, Fresno Scholarship Office, 5150 N. Mr. Molen was the first person who said to me, "why not?" He encouraged me to interview Marcuse, Baez and others for Insight. He took my copy seriously enough to line edit it.He will always be a gift. Class of 1972

Professor Dayle Molen's kind and caring nature and dry sense of humour has always remained in my heart. Generations of CSUF Journalism students benefited from his tutelage. Thanks so much!
My sympathies to his family on their loss.

We were traveling on the East Coast when we received word of Professor Molen's passing. Dayle's warm presence, careful instruction, and thoughtful guidance in and out of the journalism classrooms meant so much to three generations of CSU Fresno students. He was a wonderful preceptor and the lessons he taught almost 40 years ago are still being applied in my daily life. Thank you for sharing this kind and gifted man with all of us.

You will be missed, Dayle.
You were the leader of a great department and I treasure my memories of time spent with you and the likes of Roger and Jim Tucker and the rest.
Thanks.

They don't make many like Dayle, warm, kind, perceptive and a consumately professional journalist. His monument is the respect and love he engendered in his students and associates.

Dayle in Yosemite Oct. 2009 .. We will always cherish the memories of this last visit to an awe inspiring place with an awe inspiring man.
