Rebecca Follo Obituary

Rebecca Tarpley Follo died in her own home in Gadsden on Monday, September 22, after a long illness. She was 89 years old. She was born in Gadsden on November 10, 1918, one day before the end of the First World War, and was the first child of Earnest and Leila Mae Tarpley. She graduated from Gadsden High School and the University of Alabama, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and later taught mathematics at Disque Junior High School for many years. She was married to Dr. Marshall Follo of Gadsden, who, along with her sister Elaine Roberts of Gadsden and her brother Dr. William Tarpley of Birmingham, preceded her in death. She is survived by her children Kirk Follo of Lexington, Virginia, Becky Follo and her husband Tom Bentley of San Francisco, California, Michael Follo and his wife Deb Caughron of Woodberry Forest, Virginia; by her granddaughter Kathryn Bentley of Amherst, Massachusetts; and by her sister Ernestine McColl of Birmingham, Alabama.

Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Gadsden at 3:00 on Saturday, September 27. Pallbearers will be Bruce McColl, Mike McColl, Mark McColl, John Simmons, Phil Tarpley, Steve Taylor, and Dee Cordell. Visitation will also be at the church and will begin at 2:00. Burial will be at Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden, with arrangements made by Collier Butler Funeral Home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Howell Erwin Medical Fund of the First United Methodist Church.

The children wish to thank family and friends for the kindness and love they showed to their mother, Rebecca, as well as the people of Wiregrass Hospice for their good work; but most especially they would like to thank the caregivers who ministered to their mother with such devotion over the years, and who comforted her in her last days.

Dear Kirk, Becky Ann (forgive me) & Mike: Those Follo kids can write rings around me, thanks to their mother and their father and their own studious inclinations. Edenwood may not have been the Garden of Eden, but to a kid living there in the 1950's, it ran a close second, even when that smoke truck came through, as Kirk remembered, and the cry went up, "SMOKE TRUCK, SMOKE TRUCK", and we all danced in those DDT fumes. All our parents were great and all the kids nice (except when your cousin Steve pushed me down as the Cub Scout den mascot at 910 Crown Point Avenue: just using poetic license here, Steve). Your Mama was always nice, and now I know where Ernestine got the nickname, Boobie, that my mother wrote by her photo in my mother's Gadsden High photo album, because Rebecca said "Baby" at age 4 about Ernestine and it came out as "Boobie". Harvey Fergusson, a graduate of W&L in 1911, in his autobiography, "Home in the West", wrote, "What is memory but a cut that never heals." Y'all's Mother took good care of you, and you took good care of her. She once told me, "Marshall said that the only way you could safely cross Rainbow Drive from Edenwood to get to Collier-Butler was to go by hearse. She rests in peace now. "May angels surround her and saints welcome her in peace." Love, Charlie Hart; Gadsden, Alabama.

Becca was a second, Southern grandmother to me. Although I wasn't able to see her often during these past years, she was always in my heart. Kate, I love you so much, and I am sending lots of love from the west coast to you and all of your family.

Dear Kirk, Becky, Mike and Kate:
My thoughts are with you all at this time and I'm sorry I can't be there in person. Becca was such a fabulous individual. You are all lucky to have had her in your entire lives. Her light is shining in all of you. One favorite Becca moment: when my mother, Colette, daughter, Caitlin, and I were on a three generation girls' trip to London ~1996, and Becca mistook our cab drivers' gesture and gave him a big hug (that Brit was surprised!) Such love...

Becky,
Your mother was a wonderful lady. She tried her hardest to teach me algebra! I remember her with great fondness. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Kirk, Beck, & Mike,
I do wish so much that I could be there. Unfortunately I am unable to drive that far. Your mother meant the world to me, as she did to my parents. I would never have made it through mothers death without her support.
My thoughts and prayers will be with you all during this time.
Since it has been a while I just thought I would let you know. I am the daughter of Howell & Eva Russell Talley.

Becky, I will always remember how nice you were to me when I was a little girl. You gave me paper and pins to draw with when we would shop at the Saks store. Once you took me to lunch at the White Palace.

I am very sorry about your Mother.

Kirk, Becky & Michael -
I have you all on my mind and in my heart. Wish I could actually just be there to share my thoughts instead of using this guest book and written words. Beck was someone I certainly looked up to during my childhood and beyond. I will miss her strength and elegance. love cousin Jeanne
