CHARLES SOUKUP Obituary

SOUKUP, CHARLES R.

Charles (Chuck) Raymond Soukup, 83, completed his journey on October 25, 2010.

Chuck was born on February 4, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the son of Loretta Eva (Frick) and Charles Soukup. He was a brother to Dorothy, Earl, Harry and sister, Arlene Soukup.

Chuck graduated from Benedictine High School in 1944. He joined the Seminary and studied Theology for a period of five years. Deciding that his life would take another path, Chuck joined the Air Force in 1950. He was stationed at Albrook Air Force Base where he met a very young Veira Helena Sole at Curundu Bowling Alley. Chuck did not speak Spanish and Veira did not speak English. They used a San Blas gentlemen as their interpreter. Upon being honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force, Chuck returned to Panama where he married Veira on November 27, 1954. He began work as a U.S. Customs agent and continued to do so until he retired on January 4, 1985. Chuck and Veira moved to Ocala and then settled in Gainesville.

He received many accolades and service awards during his employment for the U.S. Customs. Chuck has been a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Life Member of the Elks, and a proud member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2811, Gainesville, the Over Fifty Club, and an active member of the Catholic Church. He was a chef for different sororities and fraternities at the University of Florida in Gainesville. His passion was being in the kitchen and cooking for others. He and his wife lived for the time they were able to spend with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Their home was always open to friends and family of all ages. They loved company and the laughter and joy that came with the visitors that came into their lives.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 56 years, Veira; his children, Debbie, Chuck, Patricia, Robert, Doreen, Paul and their spouses. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Harry, his twin brother, is the only remaining member of his immediate family and resides in Cleveland, Ohio.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church 500 N.E. 16th Avenue, with Fr. Roland Julien as Celebrant.

On Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. the VFW Post 2811, 1150 N.E. Waldo Road, will be celebrating Chuck's life.

Arrangements are under the care of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN 404 North Main Street.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the VFW, Post 2811, 1150 N.E. Waldo Road Gainesville, FL 32641.

Not sure what to say?

October 31, 2011

Mrs. Soukup, this is very late, but, being that my Dad and you and Mr. Soukup were such good friends for a lifetime, I want to let you know, how much I loved him. He was such a gentle soul, and both of you were so suited for each other, all those year. I hope you are getting along, and my condolences to you and your family (late, I apologize).

My sincere sympathy to the family of Mr. Charles R. Soukup. He was indeed an exceptionally genuine person who had a heart of gold. I had the pleasure to have known him and the family and my heart goes out to each and everyone of you for your loss. He will be missed by many many people and has left a great legacy behind him. He is with the Lord I am sure in the great place they call Heaven and even if we do not have him here on earth with us he will always be in our heart and soul. Until we meet again Chuck...God bless!

To the family - I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Soupkup's untimely passing. I'm sure he would have passed the 100 mark with ease as jovial and easy going as he was. I remember him from childhood and through high school and when Mom and Dad lived in Dunnellon. I'm sure he and Dad have reunited their friendship now, along with the others that have gone before them, and they are happily "Boarding their ships in the heavens".

My heart felt sympathy and prayers go out to the Soukup Family. I came along to Customs a little late in time to know Chuck on a personal basis but I feel like I knew him. I knew him to be an honorable member of the community and a profesional in his work.
