ELLA SCHENCK Obituary

SCHENCK, ELLA MAE, 95

Ella Mae (Beasley) Schenck, resident of Dowling Park, and long time resident of Alachua County, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2012. She was 95 years old.

Mrs. Schenck was born in Hawthorne, Florida on November 27, 1917, the youngest daughter of James Madison Beasley and Sarah Rebecca (Townsend) Beasley. She graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1935 where she was the Valedictorian of her class. She attended the University of Florida, earning Bachelors, Masters and Specialist Degrees in Education. After finishing her Bachelors Degree, she taught elementary school two years in St. Johns County, Florida before returning to teach in Waldo Elementary School. During her educational career she was a teacher, reading supervisor, elementary supervisor, and principal. She was the first principal of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Elementary School in Gainesville, and was there for many years. She finished her career in 1985 as principal of Waldo Community School.

Mrs. Schenck was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Education Honorary, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Retired Teachers Association. She was a Methodist.

Preceded in death by her husband of fifty-seven years, she is survived by her three sons, Dr. Robert S. Schenck, Jr., James Larry Schenck, and Alton Michael Schenck; four grandchildren, Kirk, Shelly, Tucker and Rob and eight great grandchildren.

She will be remembered as a caring Mom who believed strongly in the value of education and worked hard for many years to recognize this value for her many students.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 3, 2012 at 2:00 p.m., in the chapel of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 404 North Main Street. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Hawthorne Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends and family are encouraged to contribute to the Alzheimer's Association, 378 Center Point Circle, Ste. 1280, Altamonte Springs, FL 32701, in her memory.

She was not my teacher at WJHS, but I remember her, when I attended there, as a well-liked and enthusiastic teacher. My son attended Rawlings K-1 when she was principal and I became reacquainted with her. We had many talks and I greatly enjoyed each one. She was certainly proud of her sons. I had previously mostly thought of her as "Mike's mother," but I got to know her a little as a friend and fellow educator. The school was well-led with many highly motivated, structured programs. When I started my full internship I chose her school where I interned in fifth grade. She made me feel comfortable and at home, yet she was always a highly professional educator. She was much respected by her teachers. She will surely be missed by her family and friends.
