When I think back to when David was chair of History, I become aware that at the time we did not realize that it was a simpler time. In the age we now live in, David's straightforwardness and kindness seems almost innocent. Would that the world now embraced the same values David treasured.

I will not forget the day I asked David (Professor Bushnell to me at the time) to serve as a member of my dissertation committee, and he replied as any cavaliere would: "A su orden." What a gentleman! Though we were at disparate points on the ideological spectrum, never did David flinch when asked to help in any way. I deeply regret that he did not live at least a few days longer so that I could have had the opportunity to thank him for all that he did for me. Perro, no es importa, ahorra. Vaya con dios, David.

David was a man of pure integrity. So far as I know, he had no enemies; indeed, it's hard to imagine who could have been his enemy. But he had many friends and many, many admirers. Having visited him shortly before his death, I saw a body worn down, but a truly indomitable spirit that seemed no different than it had always been. He was nothing less than an inspiration. We will miss his genial presence among us.
