While working at the VA Hospital and Shands Hospital, Dr. Hawkings inspired me to learn, to understand about interventional radiology and to try to help others as much as posible. Even as a tech, he mentor me in many ways for which I am very grateful for. Many things I could share about my personal experience working under Dr. Hawkings. But to sum it all up in one sentence; "He was always thinking outside the box". My condolences to all his family.

i have so many fond memories of one on one time spent with "Dick" Hawkins as a fellow at Shands hospital and the VA hospital during the mid '90's, Dick was always willing to support my ideas and approach to all and any interventional procedure with excellent results. A true renaissance man with many hobbies along with a true love for interventional radiology. I am very saddened by his passing and will never forget the positive contributions he made to my career and life.

I knew Dick during the 70's, 80's and 90's as a regional manager of Cook, Incorporated. I had many dinners and chats with him about products and improvements to products stored in his brain. He was an idea man in the most real sense. A remarkable physician and a real visionary. I remember my first meeting with him in early 1970 and how enthusiastic he was about his new ideas. I came away almost mentally exhausted trying to keep up with him. Dick and I became friends and I spent time at his beautiful lake home. He was unique in his vision and brilliance and was most definitely a pioneer in the field of Interventional Radiology. Today I found out about his passing when I phoned Shands to talk to him and am deeply grieved to learn of his passing. I send my condolences to his children, Mark, Jeff and Kim all of whom I knew personally.

I am very saddened to learn of Dr. Dick Hawkins' death. I was a radiology resident at Shands and had the pleasure of working with him for several months on the angio/interventional radiology rotation. He was confident, stayed calm when I was "sweating bullets", thought outside of the box and inspired his trainees to be the best that they could be. I always knew he was watching over my shoulder (from a remote monitor in his office) and would occasionally offer words of advice on what to do next during procedures (also from his office over the intercom system!). Mostly, I remember him as honest, likable, down-to-earth with a good sense of humor. I admired him and the longevity of his career at the College of Medicine is a testament to the wonderful physician and man that he was. My sincerest condolences to his family at this time.

I have vivid memories of the time at University of Florida when I rented a house (on the lake across 441) from Dr. Hawkins and skied and played racquetball with him. These are activities I continue to do to this day. My condolences to his entire family, and Mark and Jeff particularly, whom we spent time together during my time in Micanopy.

Mark, Jeff, and Kim. Dr. Jeff Smith let me know. Back in the late 70s we skied with your father and he pulled us whenever our boat was down, he always welcomed us in his house although we were just lowly crazy students at the time, he let us play raquet ball all the time in his private court, and he rented Jack and I his other house while we were students. A great guy to have on the lake, for sure! I ran into him at the Denver airport a couple of years ago going snow skiing. He recognized me after not having seen me for at least 25 years! He will be missed.

Mark, Jeff and Kim I am so sorry to hear about your dad. Some of my best memories are of us all growing up together and especially the time spent at the lake. Your dad taught me not only how to water-ski but many of things that became very use full in life. I was sorry to have missed seeing him when I was in Gainesville last October. My condolences. Jim

Dick was an amazing physician, mentor and friend. He inspired me to become the Radiologist I am today. He guided me as a medical student, he helped me get a Radiology Residency in NY, and trained me to become an Interventional Radiologist. I will always be grateful for his support and friendship. He will surely be missed.

To Mark, Jeff and Kim, Dick was like a second father to me. I have so many fond memories of him, and all the life lessons he took the time to teach me. Words can not express my feeling of loss, and what you must be feeling. We were very lucky to have been blessed by having Dick in our lifes. His absence will always leave a void in my heart. And Kitty, Dick talked endlessly about you when I would run into him at Shands. I look forward to meeting you on Saturday.
