Alex and I took AP Art History as an independent study course in our junior year of high school. I was close to him back then and few people I've met could hold a candle to his incredible, irreverant and hilarious wit. I was sad when the reminder of his death hit my inbox this morning, but also happy that I was considered one of his close friends during his brief but impactful life.

To his surviving family: He is still very missed by everyone who knew him in Gainesville. I'm sure the people who knew him in Austin, Portland and through work feel the same. Whenever we are together, we end up sharing stories of our favorite Alex moments and smiling for hours -- we all know we were lucky to know him and that our lives are better for it.

Whenever someone gets me laughing so hard that I can barely breathe, I tell them they remind me of my friend Alex. If they had the privilege of knowing Alex, they would understand why that's one of the highest compliments I give.

With love,
Drew

Dear Paul and Cecilia, I loved your son. My family and I remember him warmly, especially during his French Lessons with Emma. What a great kid! I am sending positive energy to you. Love, Pam Vetro

I'm heartbroken to hear of the passing of one of my best friends from high school... one of the only people who understood me at that time of my life... one of the most brilliant individuals I have ever had the privilege of knowing. He had a profound impact on my development into an accepting individual. Rest in peace, Alex. You will be missed; the world has lost an amazing individual.

Alex I remember praying for you when you had surgery as a little boy. How I wish you had had the chance to grow old. Such a bright and curious young man.
