JOHN NEWELL Obituary

NEWELL, JOHN MICHAEL
John Michael Newell, 91, passed away Sunday, June 11, 2017 in Gainesville. He was born February 7, 1926 in Concord, New Hampshire to William P. and Esther Langley Newell. He received his undergraduate degree at Yale and his PhD at the University of Texas. He proudly served in the United States Navy in World War II. In 1967 he moved to Gainesville, where he worked at the University of Florida as a Professor of Educational Psychology for over 30 years. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed his butterfly garden.
He is survived by his five children, Christine Wise, Karen Hyman, Frank Newell, Susan Bishop, and Tim Newell; nine grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elise; son, Mike Newell, and brother, William (Bill) Newell.
A private interment will be held at a later date in New Hampshire. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorials to The Salvation Army, 639 E. University Ave., Gainesville, FL 32601. Please visit his memorial page at
