ROBERT MOFFAT Obituary

MOFFAT, ROBERT C.

Robert Charles Lincoln Moffat, 73, professor of law at the University of Florida, died peacefully the morning of Nov 14, 2010 after a two year struggle with cancer. Born March 22, 1937 in his maternal grandmother's home in Witt, Illinois, he moved to Ontario, Canada until he was thirteen. His family moved to Dallas, Texas in 1950 where he attended Arlington High School and graduated from Adamson High School in 1954 where he lettered in Debate for three years. He was valedictorian of his class at Arlington Junior College (now UTA) and graduated with a BA from SMU in 1958 where he continued his debate career. He completed his MA at SMU the following year and then entered law school at SMU. He graduated summa cum laude with his LL.B. in 1962 and was Editor-in-chief of the Southwestern Law Journal during his final year. He clerked during the summer of 1961 with Hon. Joe E. Estes, Chief Judge, Northern Federal District of Texas. Awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, he earned his LL.M. from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. While in Sydney, he met the love of his life, Janette, whom he married before returning to the US. He continued his legal education as a Graduate Scholar at Harvard Law School and was a S.J.D. candidate. The following year, he accepted a position at the law school at the University of Florida, where he shortly became a full Professor. He continued his career at Florida, teaching until just two weeks before his death. He also was a visiting professor and scholar at a number of universities, including: the University of California, Berkeley; Oxford University, Brasenose College in England; Monash University, Melbourne, Australia; and Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität, Frankfurt, Germany. He loved teaching, and was proud to count a large number of very successful attorneys among his former students. He edited multiple books and had chapters and articles published in too many publications to list and was honored to present papers before numerous conferences over the years. He was a member of the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy since 1962 and held multiple positions in the American chapter, including Executive Director and President. A talented musician, he played piano, trumpet and cornet. In Florida he sang in the Gainesville Civic Chorus and even participated in a Community Theater production of The Mousetrap. He was a faithful Bull Gator fan who supported all UF athletic activities.

He was a lector at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Gainesville where he maintained his membership throughout his time in Gainesville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janette and his parents, Carl E. and Velma Armentrout Moffat.

He is survived by his daughter, Kaaren Moffat of Cork, Ireland and his son, Iain Moffat of Gainesville, FL and his brother, David Moffat of Dallas, TX. He also left behind his dear friend, Audrey Lewis of Gainesville, FL.

A memorial service will take place Thursday, December 9 at 2 PM at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church 100 NE First Street with The Rev. Louanne Loch officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Robert Moffat's memory be made to the Professor Robert and Janette Moffat Memorial Scholarship in Law, University of Florida Foundation, Inc. Attn: Gift Processing, PO Box 14425, Gainesville, FL 32604.

Robert & I were highschool classmates and
college debate colleagues. We were also just good buddies. We double dated, ran around together, and had good times - so many years ago.

He was best man at my wedding & when he brought Janette back with him from Australia, they spent their first night in the US with us at our home in California.

The Moffat family visited with us in New York and Houston as well. We watched Kaaren and Iain grow up.

God bless you Kaaren & Iain. Your father
was my lifelong friend.

We are so sorry to hear that Gainesville and the UF Gourmet Group have lost yet another member of the Moffat family. It was such a pleasure to share many meal and holiday party experiences with them. They both left their stamp on our group in a big way and I think about them every time I go through recipes. Kaaren and Iaian, I am so sorry for your loss.

Professor Moffat was one of my favorite professors in law school. He was brilliant, kind, and inspirational. Every time that I visited the law school after graduation I made it a point to eat lunch with him. He was so proud of my accomplishments and that meant the world to me. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing and will do my utmost to be at the memorial service.

Dear Kaaren and family,

Reading this obituary I am amazed (but not at all surprised) at the intellectual prowess and achievements of your father. I already understood that he had been a very caring father as well as a wonderful and strong personality from your personality descriptions, but I can now see as well what a major figure he was in his field. My deepest sympathies to you and your family, we are all thinking of you.
Best Wishes, Bernadette and family, Ireland

Bob Moffat was a long-time member of AMINTAPHIL, and one of the very interesting contributers. He was both a serious and humerous commentator on our papers. Of course, we all miss him.

I am so sorry, dearest Kaaren and Iaian, at the loss of your dear Dad. What painful things he has had to face. Please accept my love, deep empathy, and prayers. My memories of time spent with Robert and Janette, and both of you, are so very clear, and joyful. Your present expressions of affection and thoughtfulness are treasured. I shall find a quiet place, and think of you both beginning precisely at 2:00 - your time - on Dec. 9th. So know that I shall be there in spirit and prayer, by your sides. God bless and keep you, and all the rest of us who mourn his loss. Love, Louisa
