Keith W. Carter Obituary

Keith W. Carter died in his home June 18, 2012, of acute myelocytic leukemia. He was in the loving care of his family and friends as he faced death with courage, peace, and acceptance. Keith, the only son and first child of Lawrence "Carney" Carter and Hazel Mulkey Carter, was born on February 25, 1933, in Jennings, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and also held a Master of Arts in Counseling degree from the University of Denver. He early career years were in public school music and counseling, locally in District 20. Since 1977 Keith served the community of Colorado Springs as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice. One of the greatest joys in his life was working with people, and he wanted the community to know how much he loved his profession and practice. All whose lives were enriched from knowing Keith will remember him as profoundly nurturing, kind, and empathetic; a man who treated others with respect that garnered unmeasurable loyalty. He was also a man of great compassion and courage with a keen intellect that could designate him as the personification of life long learner, always growing, a great searcher of inner truth. In relationships he was sincere and attentive, a gentle man and a gentlemen with impeccable manners and an extraordinary aesthetic appreciation. Keith was a spiritual man, honest, and with remarkable insights. His sense of humor added a refreshing dimension to relationships. Keith's joys outside his professional life included music, theater, cycling, and singing in Out Loud: The Colorado Springs Mens Chorus. His life was also enriched by his membership in First Congregational United Church of Christ. Keith was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by: A daughter, Angela Harrington, her husband, Steve Howard, their son and Keith's grandson, Seth Howard; a son, Steven H. Carter; a sister, Creta Carter Nichols, and her husband, W. Eugene Nichols; two nephews, Scott Nichols and his wife Charmayne, Christopher Nichols, his wife, Andrea, and their children, Carter and Katie; a host of devoted friends. A memorial service in celebration of Keith's life will be held Monday, June 25, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 20 East Saint Vrain Street, Colorado Springs. Keith, when you called and tried referring me to your friend, and explained that you were sick, I gave you a friendly hard time and explained that you werent getting rid of me that easy!! I told you I would wait for you to get better and we would resume our talks. Well my friend I just found out last night that you have passed and I feel pretty lousy that I did not know this earlier in the summer. I kept wishful thinking that you would call me this fall, after both our busy summers and say you were ready to resume our monday talks and morning cup of coffee. I will sure miss you, and miss running into you in the gym buddy, Kim and I had our baby August 15th. Johnny Lee Saputo. Keith, he will thank you one day when he's older because without you Keith, I'm not sure I would have made it through the dark days and sleepless nights. You gave me a sense of self worth and direction when I needed it most. You will truly and deeply be missed. God bless your family and in your spare time keep an eye on me would ya ;) I need all the help I can get. Love ya buddy. PS----We both looked damn good in those Robert Graham shirts!!!!!!

My friend, my mentor and the one I could always confide in. I will miss our talks and the feeling of peace you would give me as I left your office each time over the past 20+ years. There are no words to describe the thankfulness I feel having had the honor of your presence in my life. You were an amazing, intuitive and caring man that helped me in my darkest times. God Bless You my friend. You are and always will be deeply missed.

Rest in peace knowing that so many of us are better people just because of you.

I knew Keith as the deeply compassionate and insightful man who supported my dad through thick and thin. And I, too, found some refuge and peace with his kind ear and warm smile on several lucky occasions. Thank you, Keith, for sharing with me some stories I will never forget about my dad-- and with you, many more will go to sleep.

I send deep condolences to all of Keith's loved ones. He was a beautiful soul, I'm sure made more beautiful by your presence in his life.

Keith was a source of support and inspiration to me through many years, including through some of the most difficult emotional times of my life. He was intelligent, sensitive, and caring. But beyond that he was a brave soul who was willing to go both to the brightest and the darkest places of the psyche in search of truth and experience, or to help others.

Like so many others, I will miss him deeply.

Many great memories of playing in the band at Air Academy High School for "Mr. Carter." When he saw me 40 years later he remembered my name and what instrument I played [trumpet]. Keith was an excellent teacher and a fine friend.
