Sally Olds Obituary

Sally Brookens Olds was born in Topeka, KS September 2, l940 to Randall and Naomi Carlson Brookens. After WWII, the family moved to Emporia where her parents operated a news and book store. She was raised in Emporia, and graduated with a B.S.N. nursing degree from Kansas University in 1962. She married her husband Joe in 1961.

In 1969 she, Joe, and their two children moved to Colorado, where she continued her nursing career. Sally received a M.S.N. from the University of Colorado and was a professor of nursing at Beth-El School of Nursing for over 20 years. While teaching she teamed up with Marcia London and Pat Ladewig to write the first "Maternal Newborn Nursing" book which over the years became the leading obstetrical nursing textbook in the world and is still in publication. She was well known and respected in nursing circles by both her colleagues and many students.

Sally was active in the community and cared deeply about womens issues. She was an advocate of many causes and a volunteer with the SANE (Sexual Abuse Nurse Examiner) program at Memorial Hospital. Traveling was a joy to her, she visited many foreign lands as either a nurse or tourist.

After retirement she finally had time for needlecraft and reading. She and Joe got involved with Old English Sheepdog Rescue, she rode many miles snuggling

Sheepdogs in the back seat of the car. Sally found incredible satisfaction in helping the dogs.

Sally was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Larry and Dana.

She is survived by her husband Joe, son Scott and partner Roy of Salt Lake City, and daughter Allison and partner Dave of Boulder County. She will also be missed by her two Sheepdogs, Cassie and Kobie.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Old English Sheepdog Rescue c/o Bette Green 4360 Wileys Road, Peyton, CO 80831.

Services will be held Saturday Feb. 22 at 4:00pm at Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave.

Sally was way more to me than "aunt Sally", she was my best friend that I could always count on for a listening & loving ear. She helped me with my struggles with addiction & she always helped me celebrate the victories. I can not find words to describe her heart and I don't have the space to express how grateful I am to be her nephew & friend. I love you aunt Sally, your voice will be missed and you always will have a portion of my heart that is filled with your love. My prayers go out to uncle Joe, Scott & Allison. May the peace of God fill the hearts of all who new her. Thank you Aunt Sally for filling my heart with love, peace and joy. Until we meet again my dear aunt Sally, Thank you... David A. Brookens

Joe and Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. I had the privilege of being a KU Nursing Classmate. Sally would often give me a ride when we had the opportunity to visit our homes when we were at KU..she being from Emporia and I from Olpe. I remember her family's Emporia News Depot. She touched many lives with her long career in nursing! KU prepared us well! I was aware that she had published a nursing book that is used around the world! We were so proud of her for that accomplishment! May your life be filled with many happy memories of your life together!

Sally was one of my favorite nursing instructors, so knowledgable, and very encouraging and compassionate to a young student nurse. Beth-El class of 1983

Sally (and Joe, of course) always made my day by showing up for dinner & making me laugh. Her beautiful smile really did light up the room. I was honored
to paint Cassie & Kobie. Sally made me feel special & I suspect she did that for everyone else who loves & misses her.

I had the absolute pleasure of growing up and going to school with Scott and his wonderful sister Allison. Although I only had the pleasure a couple of times to meet Sally, she was always so nice. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My sympathy to the Olds family. I had the priviledge to work with Sally while teaching at Beth-El School of Nursing in the 1970s. She was a wonderful nurse and shared that with her students. Leann Scroggins

Dear Scott & family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Your mom was always so sweet to me even though she probably worried that I was a BAD influence. I will always remember her with great fondness. I have really enjoyed the pictures and posts on Facebook of your visits with your mom over the last months. You are the best son a mother could ask for. Love, TJ

Dear Joe and family, cherish all the wonderful memories you have of life with Sally. One of my dearest ones was the morning she brought me tea in bed...we were at the cabin, pre-furnace era, and she didn't want me to get out of bed until the cabin warmed up. One example of her tremendous kindness and thoughtfulness when it came to others.
God Bless all of you.
Love,
Mary Milton

I didn't know Sally, but reading this beautiful tribute, I sure wish I had. I adore her son Scott and if his life is indicative of the mother who raised him, she was a gem! All of my love to her family and friends. Peace to you today and everyday.
