June Smith Obituary

NORTHAMPTON - June Duval Smith of Northampton, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2015, at Loomis House after a period of declining health.

June was born in 1926 and graduated from Easthampton High School in 1943. She often mentioned how small the class was since so many of the men were at war. June got her bachelor's degree from Bates College in 1947 and later earned a master's degree.

She taught first grade for 45 years, initially at Bridge Street School and then moved to Jackson Street School when it opened. She retired in 1998.

June was predeceased by her mother and father, Edward and Lillian Duval, as well as her siblings Milton and Helen, and her first husband Oscar Gonsolus.

She is survived by her brothers Lowell Duval (Priscilla Searle) of Rough and Ready, California, and Paul Duval (Diane Danthony) of Northampton. June leaves many nieces and nephews in Texas and California, and locally, Jessica and Jake Morgan of Northampton, and a much-loved grandniece Briana Collazo.

No services are scheduled and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, June asked that people remember her with gifts to the Northampton Education Foundation, P.O. Box 44, Northampton, MA 01061.

The family would like to thank the staff at Loomis House for the exemplary care they extended to June.

Ms Smith was our son's first grade teacher 27 years ago at Jackson Street School. She was by far one of the few most memorable teachers in his career. We fondly remember her as a model teacher. She was compassionate and professional. i know her students loved her. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time. Mary Ellen and Bob Walsh
