I met charles at the virginia art residency ( VCCA) which we both attended at the same time some years ago. I have been in communication with him by phone off and on ever since that time. There was something about Charles, a combination of intelligence, understanding, sense of humor and simpatico that I was drawn to, and we had some wonderful conversations taking strolls at the VCCA campus. Before we parted company, Charles bought a black and white photo I had taken, a moody one of a person strolling down an alley next to a synagogue, taken at night in Prague. He told me he kept it over his fireplace, which gave me great pleasure. Later, When I had great trouble over a departed girlfriend, Charles listened to my endless meanderings patiently, and gave me advice, which I wish I could have followed.
Lately, I noticed in our conversations that age and Parkinsons was starting to erode his usual sharpness, and when I called today and didn't here his taped message that I usually heard, I thought something may have happened. Tonight, I t bought of looking on the internet, and my sad thoughts were confirmed. He is one of 4 people who have recently died that played some part in my life. I wish I could have made it to Amherst some years ago to see him. I am so sorry. I will miss him.
