Patrick Archbald Obituary

HOLYOKE - Patrick Wodrow Archbald, 80, passed away Friday, March 6, 2015.

He was born March 17, 1934, in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, to parents Wodrow and Jane (Suender) Archbald. Pat attended local schools and the Gunnery in Connecticut, before graduating cum laude from Yale University in 1956 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. While at Yale, he was a member of the crew team.

He married Ellen Morrison of Pottsville in that year, and began work as a civil engineer for Bechtel Corporation in California. After several years and two relocations, Pat and his growing family moved back east where he began a 30 year career at Williston Academy in Easthampton. While at Williston, Pat taught chemistry and physics, and over the years held positions as head of the science department, varsity lacrosse coach of both the men's and women's teams, and supervisor of Williston's summer school, among other duties.

Pat retired in 1991, and moved to Damariscotta, Maine. He spent the last three and a half years of his life happily at Loomis House in Holyoke.

Pat is predeceased by his first wife Ellen (Morrison). He is survived by his sisters Ann and Sara; brother Tom; his sons Kevin, Michael, Robert and Patrick; daughter Nancy; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his second wife, Judy (Kendrew), step-children Kim and Todd Potasky and Shannon Shaw, and by his long-time companion Mary Hart.

Pat was a member of the Pascommuck Club in Easthampton, and over the years was a communicant and lector at Immaculate Conception Church in Easthampton, a member of the Jaycee Club, and an avid fan of the Red Sox and Patriots. He also greatly enjoyed motorcycling, particularly touring with Judy. After retirement he traveled extensively with Mary both in the U.S. and abroad.

At Pat's request, final arrangements are private.

Anyone wishing to remember Pat may do so through a charitable contribution in his name to either the Williston Northampton School, Easthampton, Damariscotta Lake Watershed Association, Jefferson, Maine, or Skidompha Library or Miles Memorial Hospital League, both in Damariscotta, Maine.

The O'Brien Funeral Home, 17 Clark St., Easthampton, MA, has been entrusted with arrangements.

Eight years it's been since my older brother departed this realm - hard to believe. I'm happy to receive this memory today, and I'm thinking with much love of his five great kids, partners, grandkids. Wish I were better connected to them! Age taking its toll is a bad excuse. :-( Regardless, I can still send my love to my nephews and niece, Kevin, Michael, Bob, Patrick, and Nancy. Come visit! 34 Taylor St Portland, ME.

I am so very sorry to hear about the passing of your father. He was incredibly kind to me as a student at Williston and I enjoyed babysitting some of you younger ones. I remember my first chemistry test, I got a 43....yes a 43 and that was after your dad scaled my grade with an additional 20 points. He never made me feel stupid and knew I wasn't a chemistry student and kindly paved the way for me to join Yves C.'s Energy Science Class which I had wanted from the beginning anyway! I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. He was a great and kind man. Tara O'Brien McNally
