David Sundal Obituary

David Olaf Sundal December 8, 1929 – February 17, 2012 David Olaf Sundal, beloved son and brother, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 17th, 2012. He was born in Ottawa, Illinois on December 8th, 1929, to Reverend Olaf and Ruth Sundal. The family moved to Grand Junction in 1930 where Reverend Sundal founded the Gospel Tabernacle Church. David attended Grand Junction High School and Mesa College as well as University of Colorado, Boulder. He worked as a chemist for the department of energy in Grants, New Mexico and in Grand Junction. He also worked for the postal service in Grand Junction. David was active in both the Historical Society of Grand Junction and the Museum of the West. He was a well respected authority on the history and the architecture of Grand Junction. He was a valuable asset as a historian and author and as a respected resource of information of the local area. He was an expert in classic cars and often gave advice and information to collectors and car museums. He was very involved in the Church of the Nativity, serving in a variety of capacities, including but not limited to thoughtful writing of church publications. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Marilyn and Fairy Lorraine. He is survived by his sister, Faith James (Edwin) of Grand Junction; niece, Lou Ann James-Currier (Allan); nephews, Andrew and spouse, Toni Lee of Las Vegas, and Jonathan James and spouse, Rene of Grand Junction, as well as six nieces. Services are pending.

David was a generous gentleman, always willing to give his time to ensure other researchers got their historical facts straight. I could have listened to his oral telling of local history for hours, and in fact I did. I feel fortunate to have known him.

He will be missed for his kindness and knowledge as well as his willingness to participate and share. He was a true treasure.
