Paul McNew
December 7, 1928 - February 9, 2017
On February 9, 2017, Paul went to be with the Lord, where I am sure he heard the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
Paul was the next to the youngest of seven children born to Ed and Susie McNew. He was born in Ackerly, Texas, on December 7, 1928. His childhood years were spent in La Mesa, Texas; Portales, New Mexico; and Cortez, Colorado. Cortez is where he met a beautiful young girl, Deletha Roundtree, who had moved from Marlow, Oklahoma, into the house across the street in 1945. Paul, recognizing a good "catch", pursued a courtship with Deletha for a year. She succumbed. They were married in Aztec, New Mexico, on December 28, 1946. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on December 28, 2016.
Paul and Deletha moved to Grand Junction in April of 1953. For the next ten years Paul was employed by L. E. Schooley as shop foreman. In November of 1963, Paul opened his own semi-truck and trailer repair shop, Paul's Truck Wash & Service. He was awarded "Doctor of Motors" by the Perfect Circle Piston and Ring Company. He owned and operated his business until his retirement at the end of 1994, at which time he sold the business to his son, Robby McNew.
Paul was very active throughout his life in our Lord's work. He served as a deacon; member of the Budget and Finance Committee, Missions Committee, and Building Committee; head usher; trustee; and even as a temporary music director. In the Grand Valley Baptist Association he served on the Missions Committee. Paul was involved in the building of Bookcliff Baptist Church and Monument Baptist Church. He aided in getting the first pastors on the field for Trinity Baptist Church (now Orchard Mesa Baptist Church) and Central Baptist Church (now New Covenant Baptist Church) in Grand Junction. He helped in securing a church building for Southern Baptist work in Rifle, Colorado. He was a charter member of two churches, Monument Baptist Church in Grand Junction, and Crown Peak Baptist Church in Battlement Mesa, Colorado.
Pau is survived by his wife, Deletha; children, Robby (Connie) McNew, and Becky (Rick) Delk; grandchildren, Tanya (Rory) McNew Cornelison, Andrew McNew, Tasha McNew, Michelle (Richie) Delk Hahn, and Chad Delk; and great-grandchildren, Isabella Cornelison, Natalie Cornelison, Jacob Hahn, Bryce Hahn, and Megan Hahn. All of Paul's siblings and his parents preceded him in death.
A celebration of his life will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 395 31 5/8 Road, at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2017.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church for the Building Fund.
