Kenneth L. Merfeld was born on Sept. 14, 1935, in Packard, Iowa, the son of John and Margaret (Hammel) Merfeld. He received his education and graduated from the Chapin High School. Following high school Ken began working for Ralston Purina in Iowa Falls, where he would be employed for 22 years. For 24 years Ken then worked for Kerber Milling in Emmetsburg until his retirement.
On Oct. 5, 1958, Ken was united in marriage to Sharon Anderson at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Mason City; this union would be blessed with three children.
In Ken's free time he enjoyed many hobbies. Among his favorites were woodworking, taking walks, working on puzzles, feeding the squirrels and visiting with his friends at McNally Bakeshop. Ken also enjoyed taking mini-vacations with Sharon, his favorite being their trip to Branson, Mo., to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. In the last year he developed a love of sitting on his front porch swing and watching the Decorah eagle's nest camera.
Those grateful in sharing in his life are his wife, Sharon, Emmetsburg; his children, Rod (Julie) Merfeld, Royal, Jeff (Patricia) Merfeld, Indianapolis, Ind., and Jenny (Eric) Helding, Eldridge; grandchildren, Skye, Hillary, Roman, Abby and Gavin; siblings, Lyle (Betty) Merfeld, Mason City, and Arlene (Gordon) Kammrad, Mason City; as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.
