Eugene Kopecky Obituary

Eugene Lamar Kopecky

San Angelo

Eugene Lamar Kopecky, 95, of San Angelo, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 24, 2016, in San Angelo.

Lamar was born in Gonzales, Texas, to Eugene and Martha Adams Kopecky. He graduated from Gonzales High School as valedictorian in 1938, and went on to graduate from The University of Texas with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting in June of 1942. In July of 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country honorably as a radio man on the Blimp at Moffett Federal Airfield.

After being honorably discharged from the U. S. Navy, he moved to San Angelo and then Midland, to work for a CPA firm. There he met the love of his life, Elizabeth "Beth" Prothro and they were married on Nov. 24, 1948. Lamar and Beth moved to San Angelo in 1951, where they made their home and raised their children for 65 years. He worked for several accounting firms finally settling at Jones, Hay, Marschall and McKinney PC, where he eventually became partner and retired after 33 years of service to the company.

Lamar was a member of the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo. He was a very active member of the Methodist Church for the San Angelo District and the Southwest Conference, serving on the audit committee for over 20 years. Lamar served on the Board of Directors for the San Angelo Symphony and also as treasurer, the Meals for The Elderly Board of Directors and was a 50-year member of the downtown San Angelo Lions Club.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who devoted his life to his family and had a tremendous faith in the Lord. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Lamar was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Beth) Kopecky of San Angelo; his son, Gene Kopecky of San Angelo; his daughter, Martha Suiter and her husband, Jim of Osceola, Missouri; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his sister, Ruth Dunnam of San Angelo; his brother Bill Kopecky of Tucson, Arizona; his sister-in-law, Billie Hightower of Midland, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Harper Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2016, at First United Methodist Church in San Angelo with Rev. Sam Hunnicutt officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First United Methodist Church in San Angelo or a charity of your choice.
