Shirley Joann Coomer Badgett

Shirley Badgett Obituary

SONORA Shirley Joann Coomer Badgett, 69, of Sonora was born on Feb. 6, 1942, in Dallas, Texas, to Jerry and Dorothy Coomer. She passed from this life on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, in San Angelo, Texas. Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at the Church of the Good Shepherd Presbyterian in Sonora, Texas, with the Rev. Lewis Allen officiating. Shirley graduated from McCamey High School in 1960. She married Dois Badgett on Oct. 14, 1962, in Acuna, Mexico. Later, she and Dois exchanged vows in Crane, Texas. Shirley and Dois lived a typical West Texas oilfield life. They began their life together in Iraan, Texas, then moved to McCamey where Dois worked for Dowell and Shirley worked for Schlumberger. After 10 years, Dois was transferred to Monahans then Wickett. They began their family in 1967, and eventually moved to Sonora in 1975. Shirley worked for Sonora High School from 1976 to 1985. She became so close to the students that to this day when she saw one of them, she referred to them as "one of my kids." She worked at First Baptist Church from 1985 to 2009, and made many friends there although she never tired of telling them "I'm Presbyterian." She was especially fond of Brother Jim Stephen and considered him a great friend. Shirley had five great passions in her life: the Cowboys, the Longhorns, the Sonora Broncos, her country and her family. She loved her football teams and every weekend during the seasons she could be found cheering the Broncos or the Cowboys or the Longhorns, many times all three in the same weekend. She never missed a Sonora Broncos playoff game. She loved her country and several years ago started the American flag campaign in Sonora. Every patriotic holiday, she rounded up her church family to help display American flags, most of which she purchased, up and down Main and Crockett streets. Returning soldiers received a warm welcome from Shirley and she sent countless goody boxes to soldiers in Iraq. But most of all, Shirley loved her family. She never missed a school event, she never missed a reunion and she never tired of telling funny stories about family events in her life. Shirley could remember details long forgotten by everyone else, so she was considered the family historian. If you forgot a name or an event or needed a picture from long ago, call Shirley. Shirley had passion for life. CS Lewis said "you don't have a soul, you ARE a soul. You have a body." Wherever there's George Strait music playing, American flags flying or a sale on at Dillards, Shirley's soul won't be too far away. After she finds her parents, she's going to hug every single service member killed in Iraq and Afghanistan then track down Elvis. Shirley had a generosity as big as Texas, was quick-witted and her middle name was "go". She was always up for a trip at a moment's notice. All her friends had to do was get in the car and she was right beside them. Shirley loved God and she loved her church. She served as an elder and took those duties very seriously. She decorated the sanctuary red, white and blue every patriotic holiday, she brought her famous fruit salad to many church meals and she loved her church family. She attended many women's Bible studies and one year she even talked the church women into a trip to Las Vegas. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Dorothy Coomer; and her nephew, Dee Sewell. Shirley is survived by her husband of 48 years, Dois Badgett, of Sonora; her son, Scott Badgett and his wife, Chris, of Sonora; Joey Gonzalez and her husband, Jorge, of Jacksonville, Fla.; her brother, Mike Coomer and his wife, Amy, of Lubbock, Texas; and her sister, Patti Sewell and her husband, Dock, of Odessa, Texas. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Morgan Badgett of Sonora and Carolina and JR Gonzalez of Jacksonville, Fla. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be made out to the Old Glory Fund, c/o JoAnn Jones, First National Bank of Sonora, P.O. Box 798, Sonora, TX 76950; or Church the Good Shepherd Presbyterian, P.O. Box 1015, Sonora, TX 76950.

I just read Shirley's obituary and, tho' I've never met her, it's plain to see she was a wonderful wife, mother, Christian and patriot. It's sad God called her home at such a young age, I know she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. I pray God will comfort and bless them.
With love, Ruth Blair, Levelland, TX (a friend of Patti & Dock Sewell.)

I am so sorry to hear of Shirley's Passing. I was told she worked right along side Helen Hokit in the Presbyterian Church in setting up Photo's of all the Kids who were in the Military from Sonora. I went to visit Helen and got to see the wonderful display she and Shirley had set up. I have to say it really displayed Shirley's heart in this display for the Military. I know Shirley was a big person in Sonora because if you ever needed help with any organizational function or fund raiser she was right there helping. Shirley will surely be missed. May you rest your tired soul now Shirley until we can meet again. You may gone but you will never be forgotten.

I didn't personally know Shirley but she sounds like someone I would have loved to have as a friend! I graduated from McCamey High with her little brother Mike Coomer.

Dear Badgett Family,
Shirley was quite the patriotic lady. When Matthew's 82nd Airborne Brigade deployed to Iraq, she purchased a yellow Archangels(his unit's nickname) bracelet. She wore it until he returned in November 2009.
With Bronco football about to start the 2011 season, I know she will be watching down over the football field.
My sincere condolences,
Nancy Glasscock
