The Parting Glass

Of all the money e'er I had,
I spent it in good company.
And all the harm I've ever done,
Alas! it was to none but me.
And all I've done for want of wit
To mem'ry now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

Oh, of all the comrades e'er I had,
They're sorry for my going away,
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had,
They'd wish me one more day to stay,
But since it falls unto my lot,
That I should rise and you should not,
I gently rise and softly call,
Good night and joy be with you all.

If I had money enough to spend,
And leisure time to sit awhile,
There is a fair maid in this town,
That sorely has my heart beguiled.
Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips,
I own she has my heart in thrall,
Then fill to me the parting glass,
Good night and joy be with you all.

John lived a life of passion and commitment. I only had the opportunity to share brief parts of the last twenty years of his life. That twenty years told me volumes, though about the earlier years (as did John). I will miss him. John Gower, we'll not see the like of him again.

I lived in John's house in Marinette. We were District Attorneys together back in the 80's (separate counties) and later worked on cases together as lawyers in private practice. We sailed together and drank together. I'll miss him.

I have fond memories of John sitting at our kitchen table debating/discussing many a campaign strategy with my parents. Now that they've all been reunited, I imagine they've picked up right where they left off! May joyful memories lighten your hearts.

"My condolences to John's family. I have only known John for about 10 years. During that time he always had a smile, and some words of wisdom. I truly will miss his sharp wit and pragmatic approach to life's various situations."

We offer our most sincere condolences to Larae and the family. We remember fondly our sailing cruises and races with John and Andy. Also, riding up and down the river in The Chris-Craft. He was always a pleasure to be with, even when we knew he was hurting. His sage advise was of help to us several times. We would like to deliver our condolences in person, but we are now living in Waco, TX, and acting as care-givers for our oldest daughter so cannot make the trip. God Bless you, Howard and Janice Ainsworth

I agree with all of the above, who have brought good points to the table about John, from his being one of the last true conservatives, to his laugh, his warm engaging eyes, his caring nature , and his toys.

I've known John since I was eight. I met him on a bus ride to Green Bay. He was friends to my parents. We've been in and out of contact throughout the years, and I'm pleased to say that I had some good quality time to spend with him the past three years.

John lived life on his terms and passed in same manner. Heaven took a good one from us today. John, say Hi to my Father for me, will you?

Although I knew of his many accomplishments, I never met John Gower in person until I became an instructor at NWTC. John served as a member of the NWTC Board of Trustees. In particular, I recall a lovely chat we had after one of the December graduation ceremonies. John was an active member of the board, and always had the best interests of the college at heart. Like many others, we will miss him and his many contributions to Northeastern Wisconsin.

December 12, 2011

John and I have been friends for 40 years. He totally changed my life when in 1972, he and Tommy Thompson came to our farm and asked me to run for the state assembly. In 1975/76 we shared an office in the capitol. I will never forget his loud booming laugh. I beleive him to have been one of the smartest people in the legislature at that time. He truly cared deeply in how government should operate. He was a true conservative and a good man. He will be saddly missed by my wife Jan and I. Rest in peace John, you ve earned it. I have known John since 1958 at Marquette University. He was a delightful man and friend, a good lawyer with novel ideas. However,he was a little mixed up at times in his politics having voted for Nixon.
