Jack receiving the Boy Scounts of America Silver Beaver Award
Mark Kohls
February 26, 2017
While I was able to give a brief Scout Master minute at Jack's wake before the Scouts sang Scout Vespers, I thought that I would write an extended version and a few other thoughts:
Jack was dedicated to God, his country, his family, his troop, the Boy Scouts, and the community. He was a leader and a teacher of thousands.
Were or are you members of his troop?
Were you members of his troop when he was Scout Master?
Did you learn from him as he taught the Merit Badges and the 7 Boy Scout rank requirements?
Did you attend one of his many Hunters Safety courses to learn how to be safe while having fun?
Did you learn how to shoot from him? To challenge yourself to be a sharpshooter and to wear it proudly on your uniform?
Did you use the rifle or shotgun or pistol ranges at Bear Paw or Gartner Dam that he raised to the level of being recognized as one of the best in the Boy Scouts of America?
Did you learn leadership from him or were you in the Order of the Arrow when he was a leader there or when he became a Vigil member or there when he was awarded the Silver Beaver or Centennial Award?
Who of you were recruited by him to be Hunters Safety Instructors or Firearms safety instructors and to come to event after event that provided opportunities to Scouts?
For troop 1033, he opened the door of our meeting place here at St Benedict's church for 40+ years. I know a few chuckled at this but my point was this, "such humility to take time away from his family to open the door and to make sure that everything was okay" and isn't it a metaphor for what he taught us about leadership: Show up, open the door to opportunity, participate and contribute to fill the gap, and above all have fun and let the magic happen!
Last night after the wake, my 28 year old son was over and I knew I didn't have to thank him for being there, because Jack was the one person in his youth that he presented the Boy Scout Eagle mentor pin to Jack. Matt said to me, "I would do anything for Jack!". Isn't that true of all of us? He would ask and we should show. He lead by example. He lived by the Scout Oath and Law. He was a model citizen, a model leader in skills and in character, a model human being.
Judy, he talked of you as the love of his life; Jenny, Jim, and Jeremy, and your spouses and children, you were the pride of his life. All I have said about his love for Scouting...they were second to family. Duty to God, duty to Country, duty to family. He had enough love for all of you and for all of us.
Lord, thank you for sharing him with us! Amen.

My life has been greatly blessed by being a second mother to Jack. The added blessing has been the beautiful gift of his very loved wife, the addition of Jenny, Jim and Jeremy as grandchilren and the precious great grandchilren, made this blessing complete. Jack was a son in every way, always there to help his family and of course to add some fun. Jack has given to the Boy Scouts, Hunter's Safety and his friends and his church with a big heart and a big smile. he will live on in all of our memories forever. I am so thankful for sharing his life.

So sorry Judy to hear about Jack's passing. I remember how much my Mom & Dad ( 'Pete' & Eddy ) enjoyed it when he'd 'swing' by the cottage for a visit. They were so happy for him when he met you & continued those visits.
I can see a Suamico style 'fish fry' in heaven for all of them to enjoy.
Sincerely,
Carol (VanSistine) Holsten & Steven Holsten

As a child you would always pull my pony tail. That's how I referenced him back then. More recently, I would talk to him at my work when he would get groceries. And he would always try convincing me to buy his groceries. He was a very intelligent and caring man, and he will be missed by many.
