Kurt Spielmann Obituary

Spielmann, Kurt R.

We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved son and brother, Kurt Robert Spielmann. Kurt was born in Green Bay on November 27, 1977 and graduated from Preble High School in 1996. He attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison and graduated with a majors in Political Science and History. Kurt moved to Milwaukee and worked at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and after that he had other employment.

In 2013, Kurt moved back to Green Bay and volunteered at the Salvation Army. He then worked at several local restaurant establishments. Kurt loved his woodworking projects and made many beautiful and useful creations. He enjoyed being up North, fishing and being in nature. Kurt was a sports enthusiast, especially enjoying baseball and the Badgers. While he was growing up he and his brother loved being ball boys at the UW-Green Bay men's basketball games and playing "noon ball" at the Phoenix Sports Center. Kurt wrote about sports and also enjoyed writing fiction. He was a talented singer, songwriter, and guitarist and loved music. Kurt was very thoughtful, generous and kindhearted.

Kurt is survived by his parents, Dan and Elizabeth Spielmann; his brother, Jeff Spielmann (sister-in-law Jenna and niece Stella); his grandmother, Margaret Anne Jackson; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who all loved Kurt very much.

Friends and family may call on Wednesday, June 8th from 10 until 11 a.m. at St. Anne's Episcopal Church at 347 Libal St. DePere. Memorial service 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Kurt suffered from a mental illness, and in lieu of flowers please consider giving a donation to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) or to the UW-Green Bay Foundation for a music scholarship in honor of Kurt.

Dear Dan and Liz,
Thank you for bringing such a beautiful person into the world. I knew Kurt when he lived in Milwaukee and besides being one of the greatest songwriters and musicians I ever knew, he was an incredibly kind and caring person. He had a remarkable ability to connect with almost anyone he met and he was always so full of life. Though his life was cut short in years it was full of enormous quality. He taught me so much about life, and it was through him that I met my wife Amy. Even when he moved away to Green Bay I would always think about him and would ask myself what he would do or think in certain situations. I assumed that things were going well for him after his move and that he was making new friends and starting a new life. I was especially happy when he started playing music again and was reaching out to old friends. I figured he had found happiness. I was stunned by the news of his passing and greatly wounded. He touched me very deeply and I will never forget him as long as I live.

Although we moved away from Laverne Drive many years ago, we still remember Kurt & Jeff from Baird School and the pool. We, along with Anne & David, send our sincere condolences to you at this sad time.

Dear family of Kurt,

My heart aches for you, for the loss of Kurt. He was an acquaintance at the coffee shop where we worked in Milwaukee, though he always treated me like a friend: with warmth and care. He encouraged me as a musician and DJ, and made me feel like my efforts mattered. He also always was quick to recommend music that he felt would inspire me...and it always did. I'm grateful to have known him and crossed paths with him. I will never forget his sweet, generous spirit!

I have so many wonderful memories of Kurt. We hung out all through middle school and high school and played countless hours of basketball together. We even exchanged snail mail during our freshman year of college just before email caught on. Although we lost touch, I often thought of Kurt and wondered what he was up to. He was an amazing person with a heart of gold and I will always remember him fondly. My heart is heavy as I send my deepest sympathies to Kurt's family.

I only got to hang out with Kurt a few times when he visited AZ, but they were very memorable and fun. I loved talking to him because he was the kind of guy that would always challenge you to look at things in a different way. I'm really sad I won't get to have another conversation with him. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

June 6, 2016

Dear Spielmann family. My deepest sympathies to you on the passing of Kurt. I have a lasting memory of Kurt from the time I coached him in soccer. I often thought of Kurt because of a simple soccer play he made. We had practiced passing the ball to the front of the goal so that a teammate could possibly kick it into the goal. We must have practiced that play the entire practice and in our next game Kurt executed the play perfectly and we scored a goal. I was so excited that I kept screaming what a great play Kurt had made. It made such an impression on me that I for some reason when watching soccer think of that play to this day. As etched as that play is in my mind, I can't tell you who scored the goal, just that Kurt made it happen. Kurt left me with a great memory of him and I am sure he did the same for every member of his family. I hope that your memories of him will comfort you for the loss you have suffered. Thanks for the great memory Kurt and rest in peace.

Dear Dan and Liz and Jeff,
We live day to day and then one day, the world changes in ways that are incomprehensible. We often cannot fathom the human mind in all its beauty as well as its darkness and many mysteries. While we did not know Kurt, his humanity was evident in the remembrances of those who did know and love him. Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to you.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to the Speilmann family. Kurt was a very special person. He was so talented, intelligent, strong willed, caring, fun, and the list goes on. There are so many great memories that I have played through my mind the last few days from when we were growing up together. We had so many great times playing backyard baseball, going on camping trips and to my parent's cottage, listening to Bob Uecker call a Brewer's game, working at Blockbuster Video together, visiting him in Madison and so much more. Whenever I think of Kurt, I hear in my mind the words from Robert Frost's, "The Road not Taken." Two roads diverged in a wood, and Kurt took the one less traveled. I always admired him for that and my only wish is that the path could have brought him to what he was searching for. And like many of us, I wish I could have helped more along the journey. I will miss you so much my good friend. Rest in peace.
