I did not learn of Charlie's passing until Sunday morning. My heart was so saddened by the news but my first thought was I am sure mama was waiting to fall for Charlie again. She told that story so many times and each time she thought it was more fun than the time before. She thought so much of all of you while you were ministering to Harmony Methodist Church. My prayers are with you during this time of sorrow but just be assured that one day you will all meet again.

I have known Charlie since the fourth grade when I moved to Gastonia. He was friend when I did not have a friend. We had many good times together through our younger years and one thing I can say, Charlie never changed. Even near the end, He was the same old Charlie I knew in my youth. I will always remember the good times, his crazy sense of humor, and the simple fact that he was a true friend. In life, good friends don't come along often and when they do, you appreciate them and the time spent with them. I had that kind of friendship with Charlie and I will miss him. God bless the family during this difficult time.

I am deeply sadden by the passing of Charlie. He was such a fine young man and went to school with my Trip and Angie. My heart breaks for you all and may God Bless you all during this most difficult of times.

July 29, 2013

When months ago I learned of Charlie's illness from my mother, I, of course, was greatly saddened and shocked! How could this be? Charlie was my younger brother, Steven Beam's classmate. I was in older sister, Josie's class.

Our families have been intertwined seemingly forever, Mother having gone to Dallas HS with Ernie, and she and my daddy, Albert Beam, who is deceased nearly 7 years now, being good friends and neighbors of Ernie and Jo for decades.

And yet, as I was two years ahead in school with Josie, I do not have a clear memory of Charlie's adolescence. I went away to college and law school and wound up in Charlotte after HS graduation.

Over the years I have most recently run into Ernie and Jo while out with Mom. But, as she told me the news of his death this morning, I shared this clear remembrance of Charlie in elementary school. It is as vivid to me now as if it happened yesterday.

I was with Josie in the Summey's side yard, just having walked home from school. Josie and I must have had some event to go to or I was simply invited over for dinner. We came upon Charlie who was intently looking up in a tree. Further, he was throwing a ball or something up into the tree as if to free another toy that had been inextricably and inexplicably caught up in the tree. Josie became impatient with him as she admonished her little brother that she was going to tell on him. This seemed to "fuel" Charlie's fire, as he, still throwing, began laughing and taunting both of us. It makes me smile as I see him now in my mind's eye.

This memory is what I will hold of Charlie in my heart. His "joie de vivre". I'm sure his young thunderous spirit is now calling our Supreme Spirit in God to smile and laugh, too.

All of my love to all of his great family,
Lisa
