Merrill Carlson Obituary

Merrill Anne Maile Carlson, 76, loving mother, adoring grandmother and kind-hearted friend to any pet needing something to eat or someone to trust, passed away in Greenville on August 27, 2010. She peacefully and without regrets began her next great adventure while in the loving embrace of her children and grandchildren, maintaining her sense of humor and penchant for the unexpected to her last breath.
She will be missed by many, but especially by her surviving family, including children Donya Hoefer, of Atlanta; Kerri Beeson, of Greenville; Doug Carlson, of Tal lahassee, Fla.; Reese Carlson, of Charlotte, and David Carlson of St. Augustine, Fla.; grandchildren Christy Hoefer, Alex Beeson, Laura Hoefer, Eric Beeson, Hannah and Calvin Carlson and Parker and Caitlyn Carlson.
She also is survived by beloved aunt and uncle Margaret and Carl Epting Jr. of Daytona Beach; cousin/brother the Rev. Chris Epting of Des Moines, Iowa; brother Christie Maile of Beaufort, S.C., and by numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving is her trusted companion Buster, the little white dog she could be seen walking throughout downtown Greenville and who joined her in the 10-mile climb to the top of Table Rock on her 70th birthday.
‘Peetie,' as she was known, overcame the loss of both parents by age 6 by learning to rely on her most valuable asset: a fearless, creative and adventurous spirit that led her to the tops of mountains, way too far out in the ocean and into the hearts of total strangers the world over. Her extraordinary sense of compassion stirred greatest in the presence of children who needed a hug and animals in need of a place to rest.
Some of her best childhood memories were of fishing trips in the mountain with her grandfather, Reese Parker, founder of Dixie Home Stores in Greenville that later became Winn-Dixie. She graduated from Greenville High, Stephens College of Columbia, Mo., and the University of Florida. There, she met her one and only husband Norman Gilbert Carlson, cooked her indescribably good fried chicken as the talent portion of the Miss University of Florida competition and received a B.A. in art.
Peetie and Norm raised their children in Gainesville in a home full of love, laughter and pets, including the five chickens she secretly purchased the children for Easter that turned out, much to Norm's surprise one morning, to be roosters.
Peetie purchased a home on West Earle Street in 1978, decorated it with the quirky artwork that matched her personality and later owned and managed Appalachian Trail Outfitters in Clemson. When her youngest left home, she closed the store and, at age 52, set off for Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, where she earned a masters degree in creative art therapy.
She leaves a legacy of living each moment with a boundless appreciation for life's mysteries and for carrying out, by word and deed, her belief in this passage from Corinthians: "Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed every day. … For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal."
A Requiem Mass is planned for 12 p.m. Monday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church downtown; Memorials may be made to Father Flanagan's Boys' Home of Tallahassee, Fla., or to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
Today, please show a special act of kindness to another soul, whether person or pet. It will make Grandma Peetie smile.

To all mom's friends, family and admirers: thank you for your thoughts, memories and kind words that you took the time to share here. Know that your words give us comfort and that we, her children, are grateful for your willingness to express these feelings.

Mom has been gone for a month now and it hardly seems real, though it probably never will.

Each day we are blessed to hear her voice and spirit through the countless pieces of art, poetry, journal entries and inspirational bible verses - seemingly left for us (in her beautiful and unique handwriting) to give us optimism and to make us smile.

Someone asked if we know how very blessed we were. The answer is a bittersweet 'yes.'

Kerri,

Grandma Peetie, you were the best thing I ever could have asked for, and my birthday just wasn't the same this year without one of your painted cards with all the crazy stickers everywhere, and of course, your beautiful handwriting. I miss calling your house and hearing your one of a kind voice gasping and being so surprised that I, your granddaughter, would be calling you on the phone. I miss all the questions you would ask me in letters, like the one time you asked me to make a list of ten men I know who will be millionaires one day. I miss the fried chicken you cooked us for dinner, and the hot chocolate you made us for breakfast. I miss you being so excited when I would play you a song on the piano. I have memories of you everywhere I look, and I only wish my life could be as carefree, adventurous, fun, spiritual, daring, religious, musical, colourful, tasty, and loving as yours was. I can't believe you're gone, and all I want today for my sixteenth birthday is to give you a nice, long bear hug, and to tell you how much I love you, and for you to tell me all the adventures you took throughout your amazing life. You will always be in my heart, and I wish you were here to see the beautiful pictures I've taken with my new camera, and for me to take pictures of you with it. I love you grammie peetie, and I will until the day I see you again. The angels in heaven are rejoicing because you were finally able to join them. I've heard that there are colors in heaven that people dididn't even think were possible, and if there was anyone who could use those colors, it's you. I can't wait to see all of your new paintings, and meanwhile, I hope you enjoy mine.
Love, your granddaughter,
Hannah Maile

I worked for Peetie at Appalachian Trail Outfitters while attending Clemson. I always smile when I think of her. I feel lucky to have known her and to have shared some campfires together. Peetie was kind and generous to me and I know I grew from knowing her. I watched her touch many people through ATO. She was truely a special lady and I'll always hold her memories dear.

Our condolences are sent to the Carlson family. We are church members at Saint Andrews and we loved Peetie so much.

She was one of the "one in a million people" that you are blessed to have met within your lifetime.

She always took the time to ask how my family was doing and of course time to stop and hug my toddler Austin.

Her love for children was evident and she always reminded me that they are so open to learning at his age. She said to never stop teaching him as long as he is willing to learn.

I loved sitting behind her in church, from time to time she would bring in her sketch book and begin to draw during the service. Her talent and the way that she saw the world simply amazed me.

She will be missed, I am saddened to know that we will no longer hear her beautiful accent and the way that she would draw out her beloved "Buuuster's" name. I have several pictures that I have taken of Peetie, even a few with Buster. I would love to pass them on to the family if they would like.

She will be missed and we were all blessed to know someone as special as Peetie.
